Applying force earlier is one of the traits we often see in the longest hitters in the world. Training helps golfers build the physical capacity to generate force, a focus of our advanced Fitness courses. Coaching helps golfers apply that capacity in the swing, a focus of our advanced Golf and Power courses. Here’s Dr. Greg Rose demonstrating a Pelvic Punch variation, one of our favorite drills for helping golfers feel how to use their legs and trunk to apply force to the club earlier. The ability to generate ground reaction force earlier in the downswing is a superpower we often see in the longest hitters in the game. Whenever we share data highlighting this in top players on the PGA TOUR, golfers ask how they can learn to do the same. In our latest article, Dr. Greg Rose demonstrates one of our favorite drills for helping golfers develop the feel of their “legs driving their arms” to apply force to the club earlier. Golfers who fail our Pelvic Rotation Test struggle to separate their lower body from their upper body, which can increase the likelihood of an over-the-top swing. @blackburngolf shares a simple teach-around to help golfers with this limitation feel the club work more from the inside.

Whether in assessment or training, better results start with a commitment to a process. Our process is our assessment. We take every golfer through the same evaluation that we teach in our Certification curriculum, regardless of their handicap or which tour they play on. That process gives us better context to interpret results, highlighting what each golfer needs and helping us make more informed decisions about what comes next. 🏌️Maxwell Moldovan & Ben Carr

Just because an athlete takes a long backswing doesn’t guarantee they’ll have elite clubhead speed. Average force applied along the hand path is a primary determinant in clubhead speed. While a longer backswing can create more distance over which to apply that force, it doesn’t automatically increase a golfer’s ability to produce it. A very mobile athlete may have the range of motion to make a big turn without the strength and power to take full advantage of it. As Dr. Rose explains here, a golfer may take a long backswing but lack the physical capacity to apply substantial force, or begin applying it too late in the downswing to benefit from that additional length. This is an important distinction when interpreting research on mobility and speed. A weak relationship across a group of golfers doesn’t necessarily mean improving mobility can’t help an individual golfer swing faster. Yes, someone with a long backswing can absolutely still swing slower than someone with a short one. However, if greater mobility allows that golfer to lengthen their hand path while maintaining the force they apply, it gives them more distance over which to apply that force and more opportunity to generate speed.

One characteristic of the best wedge players we’ve evaluated is their ability to move the trunk and lead arm almost in unison. When we evaluate a full swing in 3D, we typically see peak rotational speed increase from segment to segment. In these short chip shots, the trunk and lead arm accelerate and decelerate together, moving at nearly the same rotational speed. Full article/video on our site: mytpi.com/articles/swing/wha…

Different shot demands. Different kinematic sequences. In a full swing, rotational speed generally peaks first in the pelvis, followed by the torso, lead arm and club. In the finesse wedge shown here, the torso and lead arm are accelerating and decelerating almost in unison. Dr. Greg Rose uses 3D motion capture to explain what that relationship reveals about elite short-game technique. Full video on our YouTube channel. youtube.com/watch?v=3InDZmkS…
