Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare, as patron of the Rundu Annual Trade Fair, urged the Rundu Town Council to address the practical challenges that entrepreneurs and investors face in the town.
These include the need for reliable municipal services, accessible trading facilities, adequate road infrastructure, serviced land and efficient, predictable municipal procedures.
Dr Ngurare made the remarks in a statement read on his behalf by Kavango East Governor Hamunyera Hambyuka during the official opening of the ninth edition of the Rundu Annual Trade Fair.
The Prime Minister said a trade fair is not simply an exhibition where businesses showcase their products and services, but rather an important opportunity to build business relationships, attract investment, encourage innovation and promote entrepreneurship.
“It also enables micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to connect with established companies and access markets at regional, national and international levels," he said.
Ngurare added that, “For the town to achieve its full economic and urban development potential, the Rundu Town Council must continue expanding essential infrastructure, improving basic services, providing serviced land for industrial and commercial activities, and creating favourable conditions for businesses to establish themselves and grow.”
The trade fair is being held under the theme “Embracing Technology for Sustainable Business Growth".

The Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, has urged the newly appointed Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA) Council to move swiftly in enhancing the credibility, quality and relevance of the country’s qualifications framework, saying a robust system is critical to meeting the demands of a changing economy and labour market.
Dr Steenkamp said the Council’s three-year term should focus on completing outstanding reforms and ensuring that qualifications obtained in Namibia remain trusted by learners, training institutions and employers.
The minister was speaking at the inaugural meeting of the new NQA Council. Steenkamp said the appointment of council members comes with a national responsibility to strengthen confidence in Namibia’s qualifications system.
“Your appointment comes as an important national obligation to strengthen confidence in the Namibian qualification system and to ensure that the knowledge, the skills and the competencies acquired through education and training are truly recognised, credible and relevant to our country’s development.”

Three generations of one family at Otjivize Village in the Epupa Constituency are living with the same undiagnosed medical condition, compounded by poverty, hunger and a lack of identification documents.
Fatima Shapondaka was born with the condition, which also affects her first-born daughter and her daughter’s first-born child.
The condition results in short lower legs and swollen knees and feet. This makes it difficult for them to walk, and they are paralysed.
The family’s hardship has forced one of Shapondaka’s daughters to leave school and become a full-time caregiver, while also fetching water from handmade wells and scoop holes and preparing food for the family.
Far from health facilities, Shapondaka says her granddaughter was born in the village because the family could not reach a hospital.
The family also struggles with hunger and remains unable to access assistance because they lack birth certificates.
Shapondaka is appealing to the relevant authorities for help with registration and support, hoping her family can finally access the assistance they desperately need.

A delegation from the Epupa Constituency has submitted a petition to the Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, Modestus Amutse, raising concerns about the proposed Baynes Hydropower Dam project on the Kunene River in the Kunene Region.
The delegation says the project could negatively affect the livelihoods, cultural heritage and traditional way of life of the OvaHimba and OvaTjimba communities living in the area.
Upon receiving the petition, Amutse said the ministry would carefully review the concerns raised. He added that the ministry will arrange meetings with the affected communities and relevant officials from both the Namibian and Angolan governments before providing feedback.

The Africa Hope Development Foundation has donated food and clothing items valued at N$35,000 to vulnerable households in Chotto's Extension 8, located in Katima Mulilo.
The donation follows a community survey conducted by the non-governmental organisation, which identified residents facing difficult living conditions, including a lack of safe water, toilets and electricity.
Director of the Africa Hope Development Foundation, Shamiso Machiwana, said the donation is not just about providing immediate relief but also about building a lasting relationship with the community to promote self-reliance.
She added that the foundation, established in 2013, also runs skills-development programmes, including sewing and housekeeping, while helping community members prepare CVs and business proposals to pursue economic opportunities.

A delegation of Namibian officials met with representatives from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) in Beijing on Thursday. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the operationalisation of the recently signed Phytosanitary Protocol regarding the export of fresh table grapes from Namibia to China.
The meeting, organised by the Embassy of Namibia in China, took place on the margins of the first Southern African Customs Union (SACU)–China Early Harvest Arrangement (EHA) negotiations.
The Protocol on Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of Fresh Table Grapes from Namibia to China was among the agreements signed by Namibia during President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s State Visit to China in July.
This landmark achievement, the first of its kind for Namibian horticultural farmers, positions Namibia to take advantage of China’s Zero Tariff Policy initiative, which was implemented on 1 May 2026.
As a direct outcome, three GACC-designated experts will undertake an audit mission to Namibia in early December 2026 to assess both the fresh table grape and blueberry production chains, a precondition for exporting to China.
The meeting was attended by Bertha Amakali, Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of Namibia in China; Asser Nashikaku, Director for International Trade and Investment in the Ministry of International Relations and Trade; Violet Simataa, Deputy Director for Plant Health and Head of the National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform (MAFWLR); Maria Immanuel, Senior Agricultural Trade Advisor at the Namibian Agronomic Board (NAB); and Yu Xiang, IPPC Official Contact Point in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China.
