When #Illini HC Bret Bielema was in high school, he thought he'd play college football at D3 Augustana. But his father, Arnie, encouraged him to chase the biggest opportunities possible. Bielema came home after school and found a letter on his bed from his dad, who passed away this weekend. It said, "What you conceive in your mind and believe in your heart you will achieve." "I tattooed (the quote) on my calf when I was at the University of Iowa," said Bielema. Arnie, who sold sporting goods, used his connections to help get Bret at Iowa football camps and be discovered. Bielema would walk on at Iowa, become a team captain and play in the Rose Bowl. After his collegiate career, he started his coaching career at Iowa. Bielema said, "I just think about where I am now, 56 years of age. The decision he helped me make when I was 18, without helping me make it, he let me kind of come to that decision, has affected my life forever."

Rest Easy ED!
In Memory of Coach Dawson The loss of a coach like this leaves an emptiness that words can hardly describe. He devoted his life to helping young people become better football players, but his greatest impact reached far beyond the field. He taught them discipline, accountability, perseverance, respect, and how to carry themselves with character they will take with them long after the final whistle. To the players he coached, he was more than a coach. He was a mentor, a steady voice, and someone who believed in them, challenged them, and helped them see what they were capable of becoming. The time, care, and commitment he gave to young people will live on in every athlete and person whose life he touched. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, players, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. May you find comfort in the countless lives he helped shape and in the lasting legacy he leaves behind. His influence will continue in the way his players lead, in the way they treat others, and in the lessons they pass on to the next generation. Rest in peace, Coach Dawson. Your work here mattered, and you will never be forgotten.
