The BBC gaslit its audience for 3 years, routinely caveating death tolls from Israeli massacres in Gaza with "according to Hamas-run health ministry", all in the name of "transparency".
Yet again, that "transparency" runs only one way: no mention that this Bell review is far from independent, as we explain below.
The reality of the "independent" review telling every school in England to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism: its author, Sir David Bell, was being paid by a government agency while he wrote it, and a pro-Israel charity has listed him on its council for ten years.
The government told the public he was "independent of Government" and had "no conflict of interest". Neither is true.
What we found:
- Bell was paid £20,000 a year as vice-chair of Skills England, a government agency, in a seat the Department for Education gave him. He held it until August, through most of the review.
- The Academic Study Group on Israel and the Middle East has listed him on its council since at least 2016. Its website says its one firm policy is opposing boycotts of Israel. It gives talks on Israel in schools, which is exactly what his review was asked to judge.
- In 2005, as chief inspector of schools, he singled out Muslim schools as a challenge to "our coherence as a nation". The chairman of the Association of Muslim Schools called it Islamophobia, and his own inspectors said he had presented a personal view as inspection evidence.
Then we followed the money:
- The department's £1.3 million antisemitism training contract had one bidder, according to the tender record. It went to Palace Yard, a company set up in 2022 by the former Labour MP Natascha Engel.
- That contract says all its training must use the IHRA definition "as a foundation". It was signed eight months before Bell was appointed. His review then recommended IHRA.
- Two of the people who advised Bell, from Partnerships for Jewish Schools and the Antisemitism Policy Trust, now sit on the group putting his recommendations into practice.
- The Union of Jewish Students, also on that group, holds a contract worth almost £1 million to train universities. Its own policies include "UJS to advocate for Israel within UK Policy and International Law".
- UK Lawyers for Israel* (UKLFI) and the Campaign Against Antisemitism* (CAA) both say the review adopted their recommendations.
*For context, UKLFI once justified the starvation of Palestinians in Gaza by the Israeli occupation as "good for obesity". Both these groups have staunchly defended Israel throughout its perpetration of a genocide in Gaza, and regularly conflate Jewish people with the apartheid state.
This matters because the review decides how every school treats what pupils and teachers say about Israel, and the IHRA definition it recommends treats some criticism of Israel as antisemitic. A review with that power should come from someone with no pay from government and no tie to a pro-Israel charity. Bell had both. The government put one in a footnote and left the other out.
We mapped every link, each with its source, explaining just how far this review is from "independent": newscord.org/editorials/davi…

Underneath all the data are human beings, very young human beings with very specific needs. We can’t outsource meeting those needs to an algorithm that has never met them.

Sometimes the parents never see the behaviour. Kids act out at school because it's a stressful environment. At home the kids feel safe and are calm.
The environment at school needs addressing and parents can't affect that.

Demands that Martyn Oliver should go are becoming more insistent. So let's be very, very clear: that the current inspection framework would damage teachers, schools and children was well known before it was implemented. I wrote this over a year ago.

No, we shouldn’t be blaming parents for behaviour challenges in schools. We should be working WITH parents to look after the child and their holistic progress.
AND looking closely at our school culture and whether we are prioritising our children’s needs on all levels 🙏🌈
“I’ve been teaching 25 years and low-level behaviour is so much worse than before - part of the problem is, if you address that behaviour, you get a reaction from the parent we never used to get”
Is gentle parenting to blame? @jasminenorden finds out.

Fifteen outlets published 249 articles about Professor Jason Arday, but there appears to be a partial media blackout surrounding Dr Lola Salem, Michael Gove’s ex-girlfriend, who has been suspended from the University of Oxford after being charged with possessing indecent images of children.

The body dilemma 😏
Schools regulate the body all day (SLANT).
Bodies are “freed” for sport only.
It’s the body regulation all day that gets me. Sitting still/upright is NOT the best way to learn - control of children is usurping “science” and associated research 😶🌫️
Replying to @3dancingfeet @AnnieBeale1
This means that children are ONLY allowed to move in ways that politicians believe are appropriate.
Sit still all day in school to “pay attention” properly (according to them but not related research). Play sport beyond the school day in *codified* (acceptable) corporeal ways.

Ofsted can slow down and damage an already improving school. It is not a force for good for the children and families in the school. It is not about a framework or the HMCI. It is a fundamentally flawed approach to school accountability that does long term damage in numerous ways
ALLFIE is shocked, but not surprised, by the disdain shown towards Disabled people. This raises serious concerns about the content and recommendations of Alan Milburn’s upcoming full report disabilitynewsservice.com/la… @johnpringdns

“The only correct way”… 😵💫
Here, Bennett assumes exclusions are a *valid* and *proportionate* response to behaviour in the first place.
You can reduce exclusions through better *prevention*, and through *changing* how schools respond to behaviour hand in hand with families.

if Tom Bennett’s classist and essentialist views on families living in poverty surprises you, then you haven’t been paying attention for the last decade. but remember the guy isn’t an aberration. he’s a mouthpiece for how bipartisan governments view and treat working class life.

I love this honest overview based on experience & is free from jargon & ego. A must read for all school leaders & school staff. Improving behaviour & getting children to take responsibility for themselves is complex particularly in some context but don’t need a guru to sort it!

Inspired to write my first blog in three years.
Thinking about behaviour culture and why compliance can only ever take us so far. Walking round our school (admittedly primary) and seeing that being part of something more all around. It’s not by accident.

Bennett claims there are radical differences between English and Scottish education systems.
Is this due to him not being embraced as a behaviour expert in his country of origin, or is this based on facts? Or…?
Let’s take a look at the actual evidence 👇

Comments on this post show how common it is for distressed staff to be further hurt by insensitive school leaders. Our baby died on January 28th 1984. On the 30th my head rang. Those days are a blur in my memory but I recall very clearly him asking: "When are you coming back?"

Reparations are about addressing transgenerational trauma, returning stolen artefacts, correcting historical inaccuracies, altering incorrect language, cultural reckoning & so many other things.
I shouldn’t be surprised that money becomes everyone’s sole focus but you’re wrong.

I was disappointed at the conversation around Transatlantic slavery reparations yesterday. Such an insult to Caribbean people. Reparations are not a money grab and they aren’t centred purely on money either. So much work being done around this & people aren’t paying attention.
