In June 1945, in Okinawa, a 22-year-old teacher named Keiko Mori was ordered to tell her 30 students to commit suicide with hand grenades rather than surrender. She refused. And she told her students, "Live. No matter what they say, you must live." While Japanese soldiers—who imposed death in the name of honor—searched for them, she kept her students hidden in a cave for 12 days.
Even when their food ran out, she sang songs and taught them arithmetic using stones. When the American soldiers finally discovered the cave, she came out first, holding a white shirt aloft to shield her students. The American soldiers were about to shoot her, but seeing the children behind her, they lowered their weapons. And they shared chocolate with the children.
After the war, some Japanese people branded her a "traitor to the nation," but her 30 students survived. In 1975, a small statue was erected in her honor in Okinawa. The statue, which depicts a teacher holding a white shirt, bears these words: "She taught us the bravest lesson of all: to 'live.'" Despite being ordered to accept death, this young teacher chose to fight to protect the lives of 30 children.
Bill Murray and Harold Ramis made six films together, including Caddyshack, Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day. Then Murray didn't speak to him for 21 years.
They met in Chicago's Second City improv troupe. Ramis directed Murray in Caddyshack and Groundhog Day, and co-wrote Ghostbusters, where Murray played Peter Venkman and Ramis played Egon.
During Groundhog Day, Murray was going through a divorce and wanted the film to be more philosophical. Ramis wanted a comedy. According to Ramis' daughter, they argued on set, and Ramis grabbed Murray by the collar and pushed him against a wall.
After the film, Murray stopped speaking to him.
Ramis later called it "a huge hole in my life." He said Murray would give you a kidney, but wouldn't necessarily return your calls.
Shortly before Ramis died in February 2014, Murray visited his home in Chicago with his brother Brian Doyle-Murray, and the two made amends.
In the video below, Murray presents Best Cinematography at the Oscars a week after Ramis died. After reading the nominees, he adds one more name: Harold Ramis, for Caddyshack, Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day.
The audience applauds.
Was it a tribute from a friend, or the apology Murray never said in public?

In 1986, Gene Roddenberry said Patrick Stewart's name should "never, ever be mentioned in my presence again."
Five years later, Stewart sang and danced on the bridge of the Enterprise as a birthday surprise for him.
It was never meant to be seen. A copy survived and ended up as a DVD bonus.
RIP Sir Patrick.
> be Patrick Stewart
> grow up in a house with no bathroom or hot water
> discover acting and feel safe on stage
> lose your hair by 19
> think your romantic life is over
> become a Shakespearean actor
> spend years performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company
> get offered the role of Captain Picard at 47
> be told by Ian McKellen not to take it
> take it anyway
> play Picard for more than 35 years
> become Professor X along the way
> reunite with McKellen as Magneto
> get knighted by Queen Elizabeth II
> speak publicly about the violence you witnessed as a child
> help women and children facing domestic abuse
> die at 86
> leave behind characters that millions grew up with
I grew up seeing him on screen. I think part of me expected him to always be there.
Rest in peace, Patrick...
