I've been trying the "side bar tabs" in chrome instead of top tabs. It's just too disruptive to workflow. The open window is disconnected from the actual open tab and i've repeatedly closed the wrong tab thinking it was a different site. Pinned tabs just stupidly take up the whole tab width, but just show the site icon. I don't get it. Am I missing something?
