When the goal is to maximize engagement, it's easier to appeal to negative emotions than positive ones News outlets optimize for this on a societal level, slowly but surely. Social media feeds optimize for this on an individual level, and far more efficiently Unfortunately pitting groups against each other often works really well in this context. Everyone gets their version of "truth" In the more harmless cases, it just fills your feed with cat videos, in other cases it's what enrages or scares you the most that gets prioritized
