A lot of leadership advice assumes you mostly know the problem and your job is to execute. Plenty of real situations aren’t like that. Information is incomplete, things are shifting, and you still have to move.
A few things help in those moments.
Be honest about what you actually know. Say the distinction out loud: “Here’s what the data shows. Here’s what we’re treating as a working assumption. Here’s what we still need to figure out.” It keeps people focused on learning instead of defending an earlier story.
Match the size of the decision to how much you know. When the unknowns are high, shorter experiments or limited rollouts usually beat big irreversible bets. Set a clear checkpoint and then actually use it. Locking in too early wastes resources. Never committing wastes momentum. Your job is to judge which mistake costs more right now.
And communicate more often than feels necessary. When things are moving, silence gets filled with guesses. A short update that restates the current goal, the main constraints, and why something changed reduces a lot of wasted effort. You don’t have to pretend you know the final answer—just be clear about the current best understanding.
These habits don’t remove risk. They make it easier to see and adjust to. They also work better when people already trust that bad news won’t be punished just for existing.
Leading with an incomplete map is mostly about staying oriented and keeping everyone else oriented with you. The details change. The need for clarity doesn’t. It is with a sad heart the topic I bring up today but it is important to understand what is going on in the society we live in. A plague is slowly on the rise as sites like 4chan, 8Chan and others encourage mass shootings and attacks on schools and places where there may be a lot of people. I bring this to you because just today there was a mass shooting at an elementary school in Oregon, three kids are now deceased, a teacher, and it was a teenager, 16 years old, who committed this act. As social media grows it perverts the minds of our generation, it encourages them to commit vile acts against others and to themselves. Mass shooting have been on the rise through the years and so have school shootings. We want to protect our people, to stop this kind of support and to stop the support of mass violence as a means to cope or to vent out your anger.
We are professionals, we do not stoop to the level of the deranged Nazi. We have morals, a system and a professionalism above them. Do not sink to their level!!
