ALT This event will showcase the world-leading engineering research produced by PhD students across the structural integrity themes, with a focus on industry-oriented postgraduate research conducted by PhD students at TWI. The conference will feature presentations from the latest cohort of industrial PhD students, as well as a poster exhibition displaying the work of NSIRC MSc students. Attendees will have the opportunity to network and share information with industry professionals, academics, and postgraduate students supervised by TWI Ltd technology experts. Our conference attracts high-level academics and industrial experts from around the world, providing a prime platform for businesses to showcase their brand and gain exposure to this highly engaged audience. Don't miss your chance to join us as a sponsor and make a difference in the world of engineering research!

ALT A range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses, designed for engineering professionals looking for career development opportunities have been launched by Brunel University London and the NSIRC - National Structural Integrity Research Centre. The courses, based at NSIRC Cambridge, are designed in-line with the industry-based MSc programmes offered by Brunel University in structural integrity (asset reliability management), lightweight structures, impact engineering, and oil and gas engineering.

ALT Her PhD project was funded by Lloyd's Register Foundation and TWI, and supervised by Dr Harry Coules from the University of Bristol. During her PhD, Cui investigated the characteristics of arc-based additively manufactured nickel-based superalloys, specifically Alloy 625 and 718, and also published in high impact factor journals and presented at international conferences. Cui describes her experience as such: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my PhD experience at NSIRC and TWI. The industrial setting and world-class facilities at TWI helped me carry out my research more effectively and exposed me to the practicalities of the industrial world. I also had many opportunities to learn about current industrial challenges through workshops, webinars and technical meetings. I have also met incredibly talented people along this journey, who have inspired me to start a career in welding and joining technologies.”

ALT How NSIRC supports our Industrial Members The increasing industrial demand for highly qualified researchers has created a space where research facilities like the NSIRC - National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC) are able to deliver important research while also preparing PhD students for careers in industry. TWI Ltd Industrial Member companies can take advantage of the support offered by NSIRC through sponsorship of your staff or research, which has already seen over £150 million invested into facilities, equipment and studentships, delivering 840 years’ worth of industrial PhD and MSc research. ALT Our senior project leader in friction and forge processes, Pedro Santos has completed his PhD. Pedro originally received his MSc degree in mechanical engineering from the Faculty of Science and Technology at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, for his research work undertaken as part of an industrial placement with TWI Ltd and was sponsored by Innovate UK as part of the Lightblank project. This led to his PhD, co-funded by Industrial Members of TWI as part of the core research programme alongside Coventry University. The research this time was focused on the development of refill friction stir spot welding for lightweight applications in the aerospace sector (in particular). “The way TWI and NSIRC - National Structural Integrity Research Centre have arranged the PhD programmes, with a suitable monthly stipend and tuition fees covered by TWI, allowed for me to contemplate the possibility of pursuing this milestone in my professional career,” Pedro explained. Congratulations Pedro!

ALT How to reduce material wastage during production TWI Ltd, holding experience in powder metallurgy manufacturing processes has successfully developed a manufacturing strategy to produce Inconel®625 (IN625) Y-shaped submarine pipe using near net shape powder metallurgy hot isostatic pressing (NNS PM HIP) technology. The development of an efficient manufacturing process was led by Dr Raja Khan along with Dr Nick Ludford, with the support of NSIRC - National Structural Integrity Research Centre PhD student Alessandro Sergi, and with the collaboration of the AMPLab at the University of Birmingham. The work was completed within the SUPREME project, which was funded by European Commission's Horizon 2020 Research Programme.
