WE DID IT! We will have more to say, and many more to thank. But right now we will just say THANK YOU @speakermenin @nycmayor @chrismartenyc and all the many passionate advocates and supporters of the successful effort today to pass Romanch’s Law to BAN Deadly Horse Carriages in NYC!
History was made today! The next step is transitioning the horses to loving rescue farms. Stay tuned for more details to come.

In 2002, Mayor Bloomberg proposed an indoor smoking ban in NYC. Restaurants and bars protested, claiming that their businesses wouldn't survive. Many New Yorkers also opposed the ban on the grounds that it violated our civil liberties. If a lawmaker introduced legislation today to allow indoor smoking, most people would think he's insane and ask how it was ever legal in the first place.
Five years from now, we will be able to replace "indoor smoking" with "horse-drawn carriages" in the above statement.
This 2006 shows how anachronistic horse-drawn carriages are in modern-day NYC.
THANK YOU to the outstanding @Geto_deMilly team!
The victorious NYC Horse Carriage Ban that has been a goal for decades galloped to a win over the past 6 months under this team's strategic guidance. Fueled by passion inspired by the tragic loss of Romanch Mahajan, deaths of horses and serious injuries, these innovative public affairs experts worked closely with @SpeakerMenin, lead bill sponsor @nycdistrict1, Health Committee Chair @Lynn4NYC, Majority Leader @ShaunAbreu, and all of the courageous City Council co-sponsors to advance Romanch's Law.
They mobilized advocates and lifted up a broad coalition of support through compelling social media, press outreach and response, inspiring ads and videos, energetic rallies, and much more. The Geto & de Milly team ensured that we were finally "in the room where it happens”— AND MADE IT HAPPEN!

There’s too much horse manure in Central Park. And if we’re talking about banning horse carriages, we should talk shit.

Via @CityAndStateNY: @SpeakerMenin had to stare down an old-fashioned union boss, Transport Workers Union international president John Samuelsen, whose bare-knuckle style of politics had scared countless elected leaders into stasis for many years.
But @JulieMenin and her colleagues did a stellar job representing their constituents and this action to phase out the industry reflects the will of a large majority of New Yorkers. Polls show that 70% of New Yorkers want New York City to join the dozens of other cities around the world who have already banned this inhumane and dangerous form of transportation.

Opinion: City council decision to quit horsing around after years of indecision will make New York safer, but they must be prepared for the consequences. usatoday.com/story/opinion/c…

.@CityAndStateNY: “In fact, NYCLASS is working with the Coalition for Responsible Carriage Horse Retirement, which was created for exactly this reason – to have a huge network of sanctuary and rescue farms, ready to take every horse. NYCLASS Executive Director Edita Birnkrant said large, well-funded organizations like the ASPCA and Humane World have also pledged to help with the transition to sanctuaries.” @SpeakerMenin @HarveyforNY @nycdistrict1 @ShahanaFromBK

19 years in the making: on Thursday, the Council passed Romanch’s Law to end horse carriages in Central Park, with a transition plan for the workers who drive them.
Speaker Menin on why now: amny.com/news/speaker-menin-…
“Mamdani previously made clear that the administration intended to move ahead with ending the practice while addressing the consequences for those involved. “The horse carriage industry is coming to an end in New York City. Our administration will make sure workers and owners are protected and the horses are safe,” @NYCMayor wrote on X.

We took the NYC horse drawn carriage today through Central Park and I am super sad to report that I fully agree with the ban, as the horses are currently treated
I never thought I would say this - but these poor animals are actually not doing that great
NYC Council bans horse carriages in veto-proof vote that will end 150-year-old Central Park tradition trib.al/qZwmUXA
We recognize that voting yes to ban the horse carriages was a bold act on the part of Council Members, and we are appreciative of them for exhibiting the courage it took to do so.
Especially @CMMercedesCD46 and @CnDelarosa, lifelong fighters for workers, who we know will ensure the plan that’s developed provides for a just transition for all.

Horse cruelty is finally coming to an end in NYC
TIME'S UP helped with this campaign years ago, special thanks to all the animal rights activists who kept pushing to horse carriages in harsh urban environments.

President Trump sort of inadvertently made an argument for banning horse carriages from Central Park on Thursday when he criticized the City Council's 40-7-2 vote to end the Central Park horse carriage industry with an ill-conceived analogy to cars. buff.ly/telGm7h
