Kenya’s public debt now stands at about KSh 12.8 trillion. This year, about 91 percent of the taxes we collect will go to paying debt, not improving hospitals, schools, roads, or supporting counties.
We feel it every day through higher taxes, delayed county funding, delayed and reduced capitation, struggling public services, and fewer development projects.
Debt is not the problem. Debt without clear results is.
Every Kenyan is paying for these loans. Every Kenyan has the right to ask one simple question.

The attempt by the Attorney-General and Treasury CS to halt this case is a diversion. The High Court has already affirmed jurisdiction, and Kenyans deserve answers on how nearly Sh7 trillion was borrowed and spent. Accountability cannot be outsourced or delayed the Constitution demands transparency, and we will not relent until every shilling is accounted for. The law cannot wait for a forensic audit to determine if the Constitution was violated.
Kenya’s Attorney-General and Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi have moved to halt proceedings in a landmark constitutional case challenging the legality of nearly Sh7 trillion in public debt.
In a significant legal development, the two senior officials have asked the High Court to suspend the case pending an appeal, arguing that the matter should first undergo a forensic audit by the Auditor-General.
The application follows a June 25, 2026 ruling by Justices Francis Gikonyo, Roselyne Aburili, and Moses Ado, which allowed the petition — filed by Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah and others — to proceed.
The petitioners are seeking declarations on the constitutionality of public borrowing between 2014/15 and 2023/24 financial years, including Eurobond loans, along with accountability for public officials.
The Attorney-General argues that the court erred by assuming jurisdiction over issues that fall within the Auditor-General’s constitutional mandate, warning that continuing the case could undermine the appeal and disrupt constitutional oversight processes.
This case represents a major moment of truth for former President Uhuru Kenyatta and President William Ruto’s administrations regarding the management of Kenya’s public debt.
