What most parents perceive as a good learning environment is actually the opposite.
Let’s unpack that….

I unpacked some practical strategies to help identify various intangibles in the latest Coaching Compass newsletter.
I have found they help reveal player tendencies which can limit the regrets we have after forming our teams.

This time of year there is a palpable nervousness in many households about what team/club/coach your son or daughter will end up with for the upcoming season.
Knowing this, I wanted to share my view on development (short version):

My biggest hope after this historic draft is that future post secondary players choose the proper educational pathway that best fits their learning style and life goals. This proves that you do not need to be in Usport or D1 to get pro opportunities.

This is a very cool #local #hoops initiative that showcases young athletes in a non-commercial, #education-friendly way, I believe. I donated.

If you don’t get clear answers to all (or most) of those questions then it would be a red flag for me.
Finding the right fit for your child is so much more important for their development and enjoyment than being on the “best” team.

- How many out of town tournaments are planned?
- (If playing recreational/house league) Will the club be offering a “Selects” team (essentially an all-star team from the pool of recreational players)?
NCASC retweeted
- What is the team’s philosophy on winning? And how will this affect how playing time is awarded?
- How many players will be kept on the team?
- What is the expected practice to game ratio? (depends on age of players but should be 2:1 at the very least)
NCASC retweeted
- Who will be coaching the team? (and then speak to others who have played for said coach - requires some extra leg work but is worth it)
- What kind of support, if any, do the coaches receive? (training, mentoring, accountability etc)

Advice for parents!
Decisions about where your child will play their organized 🏀 are just around the corner.
Unfortunately, players end up in not great situations b/c the most important factors weren’t considered.

The @NatCapClassic returned for the first time in four years earlier this month, and with it came the triumphant return of a player who’d been sidelined almost as long. @ONL_Basketball

Lots of thought provoking words to all coaches.
Twice as many girls quit sport before the age of 14 💔
A great video to raise awareness of some of the pressures faced. Well done to Liverpool and @StanChart for launching the 'Play On' initiative.
Aiming to inspire, empower and educate girls to participate in sport 👏

Merissah Russell is back 🗣️
After winning gold with 🇨🇦 at GLOBL JAM last summer, Russell is returning to Toronto this July — but this year, she'll be going head-to-head against her @LouisvilleWBB teammates on her home soil.
