It’s #nationalfeetweek and we are highlighting two of our artifacts, a shoe last and pair of shoes. Enslaved people at Somerset were given a pair of shoes, but they used shoe lasts to repair them. Often enslaved persons had to replace the soles of their shoes as a result of wear.

These silk, French-made ankle boots belonged to Emily Donelson, who served as White House hostess during President Andrew Jackson's administration after his wife Rachel Jackson died in 1828. As Rachel Jackson's niece, Donelson wore these in a stage of mourning. #NationalFeetWeek
