What's always been true is that 99% of GOP talking points can be knocked down by doing third grade level research and pushback it's just that the media is rarely interested in doing this bare minimum of their jobs.

carl sagan is like pynchon in the sense that you read his work and are absolutely floored that intellectuals of that time knew the score — that the political critiques that seem so revelatory now were also obvious then, but got buried beneath layers of bullshit, as they always do

Just got back from seeing it with friends. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. The scenery and character movements were beyond technically impressive. They were immersive.
Please go watch it in theatres! It is well worth seeing on the big screen. Top Laika film for me now!

If Americans cannot get Jared Kushner arrested we are powerless and oppressed
Jared Kushner allegedly had access to secret foreign bank accounts involving nearly $2 billion while serving as a senior White House adviser during Trump’s first term, according to Vanity Fair.
The report alleges $750 million in Saudi and Emirati funds was routed into a UAE account, while another $1 billion was deposited into an Israeli account reportedly subject to Benjamin Netanyahu’s oversight.
The alleged arrangements were tied to Kushner’s diplomatic dealings in the Middle East.
Kushner denies the accounts existed.

went to visit a friend who’s a ceramicist and works in a studio with no phone signal in a tiny yorkshire village. he doesn’t listen to podcasts or music, only occasionally uses the radio, and when I asked him what he thinks about all day he just said “well, pots mostly”

It's utterly ridiculous that we have all these supposed billionaire geniuses running around, and their greatest innovation of our lifetime has been stealing our personal data to sell us targeted ads.

the reason moby-dick remains such a vital piece of human art is that it addresses what is probably one of humanity's greatest collective atrocities, the genocide of the whales, with an ambivalence it cannot itself fully articulate. melville is distraught, but he can't explain why

this is shown within the first few minutes of the movie, and the message completely stuck with me until the credits rolled. the entire movie is such a breathtaking piece of handmade craftwork, and we’re so lucky to still be able to see shit like this get made.

cetaceans are very obviously “people” and sapient to a degree indistinguishable from humans, and this is basically scientific consensus at this point.

Readers added context they thought people might want to know
While cetaceans show advanced cognition like self-recognition in some species and complex sociality, claims they are “people” sapient indistinguishably from humans are not scientific consensus and remain contested.

So let met get that straight: paying a wealth tax is impossible (“billionaires have no liquidity”, “it would be taxing unrealized gains”, “their wealth is virtual”) but paying half a billion to influence elections is possible. Did I understand well?
Elon Musk has cemented his record as the largest individual political donor in modern American history.
Musk poured $446 million of his own money into this year’s midterm elections, mostly aimed at preserving the Republican Party’s control of Congress. wapo.st/4igb5Kq

There’s a version of the future where ten-second videos are most people’s preferred entertainment, where most writing is machine-generated, where education exists only in name. The only way to prevent this is for us, all of us, to begin regularly reading challenging books.
