Reminds me of how in 2019 NASA finally “discovered” that human bodies are made from the same particles we see in stars yet the origins of the Lakota word for star literally mean “human flesh”. Natives were scientists before they even considered us human beings

A6: "Social" should never be left out of social media for #NativeandUrban communities. It should not be seen as a vehicle for a one-way flow of information but should also provide resources for real-life interactions/support like crisis hotlines such as text "NATIVE" to 741741

A5: Homophily is the tendency to respond to or notice those similar to themselves. It's important for #NativeandUrban people to see themselves in social media content and to see trusted messengers from their community.

A4: Social media can be used to disseminate information in #NativeandUrban communities, such as during the pandemic. Native-led clinics and organizations shared news about where to get the vaccine, food banks, housing resources, and more.

A2: I wish researchers knew how many #NativeAmericans live in urban areas. For example, in Colorado, we have about 4K who live within our two reservations and over 200K off the reservation, mostly in urban areas. #NativeAndUrban

Today is a difficult day for many of us.
Take time to check on your friends and relatives, and be sure to give yourself time to grieve.
The good work needs us, but only when we are ready.

Indigenous students need Indigenous spaces. We need to spend time with just other Natives so we can talk and laugh and vibe. We need spaces where we can lean into joy. I am so lucky to have had an all-Indigenous space this weekend and it was everything.
