Motwane's first-rate sophomore film is one of my favorite melodramas. Perhaps because it's impossible to not get smitten by its visual and romantic imagery, or the incredible interplay between the two. Perhaps it could be because it's a love letter of sorts to classic Bengali cinema, tipping its hat to Ghatak and alluding, thematically and directly, to Ray's films (Charulata, Kanchenjungha, Jalsaghar). Pretty sure Amit Trivedi's tremedous soundtrack has a lot to do with it, too. Happy 10th to the heartbreakingly beautiful period romance that is Lootera (2013).
