What irony. The Republic of Cyprus, a nation few have assisted to have its unlawfully occupied northern portion restored to it, comes to the aid (again) of those fleeing the troubles of the Middle East. But who will come to Cyprus’ aid to rid the island of its Turkish occupiers?
Whatever the merits of the RLPA’s remaining claims - and I make no judgment on them - it is a discourtesy to our great game, and its legions of fans, for the NRL logo to be intentionally obscured. This dispute must come to an end.
This is not particular to Istanbul Greek. An Athenian will say πάω κάτω when referring to a trip to, for example, Rhodes - or elsewhere in a southerly direction. Greeks from Kastellorizo used the same expression when travelling to Egypt in the 19th century.
Istanbul Greek Idiom #409: Κάτω/káto means down or downstairs in both Central and Istanbul Greek, but in Istanbul Greek it also means Greece. So when a Politis says "θα πάγω κάτω," he may be saying that he is going to Greece.
