"Brave people are rare in our times. People today are lukewarm. That's why if, God forbid, a war breaks out, some will die out of fear, others will fall on the street from some minor hardship because they are so used to comforts. In the past, people were so brave! In the Monastery of the Flavians in Asia Minor, the Turks had captured a man and slaughtered him. Then they told his wife, 'Either deny Christ or we will kill your children, too.' And she replied, 'My husband is now with Christ, and my children I entrust to Christ, and I will not renounce Christ.' What bravery! If Christ is not in us, how can there be such bravery? Today, people without Christ are building their homes on rubble." St. Paisios the Athonite Spiritual Awakening (p. 244)

Blessed Feast! Fr. Seraphim Rose reposed on September 2, 1982, at the age of 48 at St. Herman of Alaska Monastery.
"There is always a connection between what happens in the world and the moral state of the people. Even when the moral state is very bad, all the constant earthquakes and famines and everything else remind us that it is the wrong way to behave, and inspire people to behave correctly. Nowadays, the historians say that this is a horribly outmoded way of looking at things, that it is very “quaint” and “naive” and unsophisticated, and that of course nobody can think like that now. They think it’s very cute, in fact, to look at this after all these centuries and to see how people used to think. “But of course,” they say, “we serious historians are looking for the real causes.” By real causes they mean what a person ate and what it caused his feet to do and so forth. The Christian point of view, however, is that these are not the real causes, but the secondary causes. The real cause is the soul and God: whatever God is doing and whatever the soul is doing..." —Hieromonk Seraphim Rose In Step With Saints Patrick and Gregory of Tours

Today we commemorate the 44th anniversary of the repose of Blessed Seraphim (Rose), a great American Orthodox struggler. May we have his prayers and may we learn to love Christ even a fraction as much as he did!
