New book available for pre-order. It simultaneously spatialises autonomist Marxism and utilises the categories of operaismo for a renewed Marxist urban theory. Read for surveys of class/spatial composition, 'the tendency' and the social factory in the midst of urban revolt.⤵️

"The students have been careful to avoid association with Serbia’s official opposition, which is itself tainted by venality and easily smeared by pro-government media. Their aim is not to swap one patronage network for another. It is to transform the entire political culture."
I wrote this about the student protests in Serbia at the beginning of last year, for @NewLeftReview Sidecar. Re-sharing because a few people have asked about the background and because it's my favorite thing I wrote about the protests newleftreview.org/sidecar/po…

Everything through a series of mediations plays back into it but it is quite jarring to consider how the US has not seen a social movement upheaval spurred and motivated around basic cost of living and explicitly thinking of itself as such for over 15 years.
Very pleased to have my new book included in this excellent list of Fall reading recommendations from @Metropolitics_
In case you missed it: our Editorial Board shared reading (and listening) recommendations, pulled together from the titles we enjoyed over the summer and those on our desks this fall: metropolitics.org/Fall-Readi…

We welcome @JohnSwinney's announcement that all buses in Scotland will be brought under public control👏
It's vital this pledge supports the work @WeareSPT are already doing to progress bus franchising, and enables other regions to follow their lead👇

Another nine HMOs housing asylum seekers were smashed up in Manchester last night and daubed with 'Send them back'.
This must be a bit like how it felt in Nazi Germany during Kristallnacht (the Night of the Broken Glass) when Jews were targeted.
Where will it end?

International AI Summit takes place in Dublin tomorrow and this is how organisers want it perceived.
Reality is deepening relations between state actors & monopoly tech, as latter comes to depend on former to create markets for deeply unpopular, anti-social technologies.

Disgusting scenes in Glasgow yesterday evening as a group of 40 masked-up, far-right thugs took to the streets on a racist rampage through the east end to target and intimidate any one who wasn’t white.
Far-right activists claim the protest was peaceful and have denied it..

Great to meet @NeilGray00 again @LSEsociology where he's been talking about his new book, "Take Over The City", about post-war urban struggles in Italy, but feels very relevant (if different from) today in Spain and France.
Looking forward to this tomorrow night @LSEsociology . First public talk after the publication of 'Take Over the City'. Hope to see some London friends there!
How do class struggle and urban development shape one another?
Drawing on critical urban theory and strands of 1970s Italian Marxism, Neil Gray explores this relationship in "Take Over the City".

I read The Brothers Karamazov when I was about 16. It was great but not easy and in my working class punk milieu it was something. Before I got to the end my brother and his mate ripped out the last pages just to annoy me. I had to finish the book in the library. Chew on that AI.
Looking forward to discussing Jacopo and Steve's new book on the the "Movement of '77" at HM this year.

Since this is "often missing from standard streaming platforms" it's definitely worth a repost here.
Quite long for a short story, but 'Soul' by Andrei Platonov.

What's happening in Madrid just now is amazing but I'm too long in the tooth to hear people saying that the far right is dead and that the housing question is being dealt with overnight. Let's see what can be forced by these huge numbers and what happens from here.
