In 1979, two East German families tried to escape to the West using a homemade hot air balloon. They traveled all over the country to get enough fabric, and after weeks of nights at the sewing machine, they finally tried it. For my latest Nebula Original, I got to interview one of the men involved in this daring escape attempt. It's out on Nebula now!
