Art is communication. When you make art you do it to express something, share ideas, convey a message, introspect, vent, etc — it's why generative AI is incapable of making anything worthwhile, because it's insubstantial, purposeless, meaningless hogwash. It's all product, no process.
When you write fanfiction, the same principle applies. I would argue it applies even more strongly because you are creating something that will, most likely, be interacted with by a community. There's a prestablished nexus point — fandom — that brings individuals together the way you may not get by creating purely original fiction. It's part of the allure of creating any fanwork to begin with. It's even in the definition of fanwork provided by fanlore dot org: "A fanwork is a creative work produced by one or more fans, generally intended for other fans."
Ergo, to pretend that creating fanwork is detached from community building is absurd and ahistorical. People used to mail each other fics decades ago. MAIL. As in LETTERS. Why didn't these people simply keep that shit to themselves? Because if they did, then there would be NO FANDOM.
Yes, people create for the joy of creating, for the inherent satisfaction of the creative process, but people SHARE it because they want to engage in the process of communication. There's something you want to say, and so you say it in hopes that someone will hear it.

there are a plethora of reasons, some of which have to do with the dopamine hit that comes along with a kudos or bookmark or comment. i’m not saying people don’t do it for validation, it’s obvious you do.

no one judges artists for not wanting their art reposted but as soon as fic writers don’t want their fics reposted it’s a problem.
“well you can download it already” yeah and you can also download art to your camera roll but you still shouldn’t repost it

Fandom→community of fans Community→people interacting, sharing, discussing, creating, engaging. You cannot expect a community to thrive when you consume everything it produces but refuse to interact, offer feedback, show appreciation. That's not community. That's just consumption

I know like no one follows me here but I wanted to give my take as a fan artist
Apologies if this doesn’t make sense, I did my best to express myself clearly :)

So fun that people have taken “authors want engagement on their fics” to mean: “authors shallowly only care about their stats, kudos, and comments” and not “we worked hard on this story and want to talk to people about it.”

I’ve noticed some ppl tend to see fanart as a gift someone shared and fics as something they’re entitled to. They want more fics, more chapters, more high volume content catered towards them
“When are you going to update!”
Is a common occurrence to all fic writers
I genuinely think the current situation is going to destroy fandom on a foundational level. Not because we'll be without AO3 for a few weeks, but because it highlights the complete lack of respect or concern for fic authors. Especially in the light of the past two weeks 1/
Except this won't the arbitrary decision of a corp, it'll be self-inflicted by fandom and touch the very cornerstone of what was supposed to be a fandom stronghold, something that wasn't beholden to the whims of stockholders or the like 5/
