Using the MICrONS mouse visual cortex connectome from @AllenInstitute, we explored how local dendritic spine organization relates to large-scale cortical connectivity. One of our findings is that longer pyramidal axons form a higher fraction of synapses onto dendritic spines. Moreover, along individual axons, spine targeting increases with distance from the soma. Great collaboration with @deangeckt, Michael Reimann, @yusterafa, @Segev_Lab. biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

Our paper is now online in Current Biology! Hydra is one of the very few cnidarians adapted to freshwater. Most of the >11,000 known cnidarian species live in the ocean. So how does Hydra deal with the constant osmotic influx of water? authors.elsevier.com/a/1ni9g…

Nobel Prize winner Ada Yonath sadly passed away today. She was a legend for her pioneering work on figuring out the structure of ribosomes. “Focus on what you love to do, what you want to know, first of all, or what you want to achieve, or what you want to do. If you want to be a performer, a dancer, it's okay with me, as long as this is really built in, and you can do it well. Courage is very important, but for science, curiosity is not enough, it should come with the courage. Really wish to understand something. If there is no wish like this, and they ask me where will I get the best salary, or I become more famous, or then I have no answer for that.”

Excited to report new work using ASAP5 to image electrical activity in dendritic spines in vivo, from collaborators Rafa Yuste and Victor Cornejo. Main result: Single synaptic activation events, detected by ASAP5, do not result in detectable somatic EPSP, but event ensembles do

1906 Nobel Prize winner Santiago Ramón y Cajal's 'Advice for a Young Investigator' makes important points: 1. The only thing in your power is your preparation 2. Be suspicious of “brilliance” 3. Be appropriately respectful of authority, but no more 4. Balance concentration and relaxation 5. Don’t worry about what it’s good for 6. Favor independence over resources 7. What is the difference between excitatory and inhibitory neurons? Beyond the obvious difference of neurotransmitter effect on postsynaptic cell, another remarkable difference is the fact that excitatory neurons have lots of spines, while inhibitory neurons have less spines. 1/13

What can a neuron compute? Real biological neurons are complex, but how capable are they? Using a new method, we found that a single cortical neuron can classify cats vs dogs, recognize spoken words, and solve 10-bit parity, all tasks thought to require entire networks. (1/15)
