GHOST SHIP was released 24 years ago today.
Its infamous opening massacre became more memorable than the film itself, with the cable-slicing sequence still frequently cited among horror’s greatest cold opens.

If (big if) this is true, in my personal experience (folks who committed “policy violations” when I was at MSFT who were summarily ejected), “policy violations” translated to corruption (stealing from the company or FCPA violations), or documentable retaliation against subordinates.

I’ve seen the reports of Chiang being fired. Sources tell me she was indeed dismissed, and the internal explanation is a “policy violation.” Chiang is departing just days ahead of more Microsoft layoffs.
Xbox’s first chief operating officer is out after just a few months. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma revealed Helen Chiang is departing today in a short internal memo.
RUMOR: XBOX COO Helen Chiang was allegedly terminated for “policy violations”, according to a source who spoke to Eurogamer🚀
XBOX commented on the matter to Eurogamer: “We don't discuss individual personnel matters. We're grateful for Helen's years of service and wish her well”
Eurogamer was not able to verify the original claim regarding policy violation🤔

The Verge: Xbox's first chief operating officer is out after just a few months:
"Helen Chiang is leaving Microsoft today. I’m grateful for her years of service and wish her well," said Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. As Chiang is departing today, her immediate responsibilities are being split up between other Xbox leaders for now, and Sharma notes that "We’ll share more on COO leadership as plans are finalized."

🔥 LOS PRECIOS SEGUIRAN DISPARANDOSE EN LAS CONSOLAS Y PCs POR ESTO... 🙃

Please buy Gears of War E -Day!!!
You all cried about XBOX having no exclusives and its biggest IPs going to the competition. You mourned the loss of Fable & co. You celebrated when @asha_shar announced the exclusivity of E-Day!
So where is that hardcore support now? Where is the commitment to backing up those statements? Stand up for the brand @XBOX. Stand up for the studio @CoalitionGears Put your money where your mouth is!
This “cheap is king” mentality honestly pisses me off.
Yes, XBOX shot itself in the foot by putting #GearsofWarEDay Day One into Game Pass. Many people will naturally ask themselves: “Why should I buy it when I can play it through Game Pass?” But if XBOX hadn’t launched it there, the toxic social media bubble would have put XBOX on trial all over again. „What about the Day 1 promise Phil gave us“
It’s a self-inflicted problem. A sensitive issue that XBOX unfortunately created for itself.
But don’t you want XBOX to succeed? Don’t you want its studios to celebrate the success of their games and have the opportunity to create more of the projects we love?
THEN BUY THE DAMN GAME! @GearsofWar If you celebrate its exclusivity and genuinely love the game, support it!
I know people who present themselves as hardcore XBOX supporters but wouldn’t buy these games for the life of them. I honestly cannot understand that mindset.
They didn’t buy any game for almost a decade! And then, in the very same breath, they’re sad and disappointed about studio closures and layoffs.
CONNECT THE DOTS. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE. 🤷♂️
Find the flaw in that logic. That’s weird and crazy. Sorry not sorry.
Thank you, @XBOXGamePass 👍🏽
In its current and previous form, this project was bound to fail. And honestly, I’ll be glad when the change finally comes.
And a massive shout-out to all the amazing people who see the bigger picture, think ahead, and put their money where their passion is. ❤️
At the end of the day, this is still a business. Nothing else.
SUPPORT WHAT YOU LOVE.
It is what it is - but it makes me sad and angry!
I honestly cannot understand some people.
“It’s available, so of course I’ll use it. What’s your problem?”
That’s exactly the mindset XBOX needs to address when the time is right. Because as much as Game Pass is a great offer for players, the business model also creates a challenge when it comes to direct game sales.
I genuinely hope that E-Day’s player numbers will be recognized as a measure of success and not just its sales figures. 🙏
The developers, the studio and everyone who put their heart and soul into this game deserve to see their work celebrated and rewarded. They poured so much passion into this project.
The Game is such a MASTERPIECE and one of the best XBOX Games for a long long time aside from Forza Horizon!
It’s my personal highlight for a long time and a fckn GOTY candidate!
Support the games you love. Support the people who create them.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 reportedly remains in early pre-production nearly 20 years after its original announcement.
• Ubisoft Montpellier is working on the game with around 250 developers.
• The team is said to be developing a proof-of-concept demo before the project can move into full production.
• The current version is reportedly focused on a single-player, story-driven experience.
• Co-op is still being considered.
• The project has undergone major changes during its long development, including a reported shift away from its previous multiplayer-focused direction.
• Ubisoft has not announced a release date.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 was originally announced in 2008.
Jez Corden confirme les 500 millions $ alloués à The Coalition.

they aint wrong on the figure, but seems to be some disagreement among my sources how that figure was allocated between e-day and general tc operations/atg contributions.

I see a lot of people expressing shock and sadness over BioWare shutting down. And I get it.
But here's the uncomfortable truth:
The BioWare that made Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, KOTOR, Dragon Age: Origins and the original Mass Effect trilogy had largely ceased to exist long before yesterday's announcement.
BioWare's decline began around the time the doctors left and much like what happened at Blizzard, most of the original talent responsible for building those legendary franchises had moved on years ago.
What remained was the brand. The IP. Basically just the name on the building.
But a studio's name doesn't make great games. Insanely talented people do.
And that's the lesson our industry somehow keeps refusing to learn.
The people who built those studios, who poured their blood, sweat and tears into establishing their creative identities were the actual assets. Their experience, their taste, their leadership, their ability to recognize what made a game special in the first place was always the thing that mattered, not the brand.
You can't simply replace those people, keep the logo on the door and expect the magic to continue.
Yet, that's precisely what publishers have been doing for the past 10-20 years.
They've spent billions acquiring studios and IPs, seemingly under the assumption that the creative output would continue regardless of who was actually making the games.
And when the original talent inevitably left, the remaining teams were expected to fill shoes that were often impossibly large, without necessarily having the experience, leadership or creative vision required to do so.
And... the results speak for themselves.
I think we'll eventually look back at the COVID-era acquisition frenzy as one of the most destructive periods in the history of our industry.
Publishers were buying studios left and right, paying absurd valuations mostly just to secure IPs... and developers were often all too happy to cash out.
At Moon Studios, we got quite a bit of crap for refusing to sell when seemingly everyone else was getting acquired.
I remember telling our team back then that I'd seen this movie before.
The exact same thing happened in the 90s, when EA went on its acquisition spree.
Studios were bought, their founders and creative leaders gradually lost the freedom to make the games they believed in, the original talent became frustrated and left and eventually the studios all became a Ship of Theseus.
History doesn't repeat itself perfectly, but it sure as hell rhymes, and that's exactly why I never wanted Moon to end up in that position.
And I don't think we're even halfway through the ultimate fallout of the latest acquisition frenzy.
There's going to be a very rude awakening for quite a few publishers when they discover that the studios they acquired for billions are worth a fraction of what they paid. And that shoving ideology down peoples throats ultimately came at a cost that they didn't quite grasp.
They didn't actually buy the creative vision, the institutional knowledge or the culture responsible for making those studios successful.
They bought the names, the buildings, the IPs and whatever teams happened to be there at the time.
But those things don't matter at all.
You can buy a studio. You can buy its IP. You can even buy its entire back catalogue.
But you can't buy the magic that made those games special in the first place.
And the sooner our industry understands that, the better.
