On this day in 1906, the John Herron Art Institute had its grand opening. The museum relocated to what is now known as the IMA, but the school has remained at this location and occupied the museum building. Pictured below is the John Herron Art Institute in 1912.

The buildings at Newfields served many uses over the years. Does anyone remember the Garden Terrace restaurant? This sample menu shows what diners could expect in the space next to the current Beer Garden. #ArchivesMenu

Replying to @NewfieldsToday
@NewfieldsToday Library & Archives joining this #ArchivesMenu party! This is what one could expect at dinner when traveling on the S.S. Tamba Maru in 1923.

Sometimes being an archivist is finding these beautiful, amazing gems ...and not knowing how they ended up in the archives. Time for some provenance research!

On September 23, 1905, May Wright Sewall used this spade to break ground on the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis! Sewall founded the Art Association of Indianapolis in 1883, but the group never had a permanent home until a bequest from John Herron made it possible. 1/2

Recently, the archives received the spade after it was deaccessioned from the museum's permanent collection. In this close-up photo of the spade's handle you can see the accession number written as 05.15; an object like this belongs in the archives for its historical value. 2/2

Are you a Yawman and Erbe stan? We found some records still in their original Y&E folder from 1914!! You can't order new folders from them anymore, but this company made a huge impact while they were here, as you can check out on their fandom page! mycompanies.fandom.com/wiki/… #fandom

Originally created for the Landon Family in 1907 and bought by the Lilly Family in 1932, the Lilly House became the Lilly Pavilion of Decorative Arts in 1969. In 2002 we re-opened the Lilly House as a National Historic Landmark. 2/2
Robert Indiana's Love sculpture was first exhibited in Indianapolis in 1970 during the opening ceremony of @NewfieldsToday. Soon after, it travelled to Boston and NYC before returning to Indy in 1972, where it was displayed downtown. 1/2

A Rose by any other name... is apparently her husband's. It is common for women in history to be referred to by their husband's names. Records like this show why reparative archival initiatives are essential to ensuring people are credited for their contributions to history. 1/3

The Reparative Archival Description (RAD) task force at @yalelibrary worked to identify the full names of the women in their records that were listed only under their husband's names. The project is worth checking out! 2/3

Our grant unfortunately does not allow us to undertake a project like this at this time, but hopefully these women will one day receive the credit they deserve. 3/3
Part of the Process: this is a tree view of how a record group grows down from the top. Sometimes the best visualization is to cover the wall in sticky notes! 1/3

In our case, Historic Preservation is the main record group with two subgroups: houses and director papers. 2/3

As we go through the #LillyHouse materials, records for other houses are mixed in and new post-it notes are added to the diagram. Sometimes being an archivist feels a lot like being a historical detective. 3/3
