Combating antisemitism and protecting democracy

THREAD 🧵 Jewish history keeps teaching us the same lesson: when democracy is strong, Jews are safer. When it weakens, we're often among the first to feel it. With Election Day less than two weeks away, that lesson should shape what we do next.

Constitutional protections matter. Due process, free speech, and equal protection guard every community, especially those who have historically been targeted. Defending them is how we defend ourselves and our neighbors. Strong democracy keeps us safe. It’s up to us to keep it safe.

Holocaust minimization, anti-Arab, and anti-immigrant rhetoric. Unacceptable anywhere, especially a college campus. The hosting organization (Georgetown College Republicans) was also reprimanded last year for tweeting, "Let’s Be Honest: Muslims have no place in American society." forward.com/news/857126/geor…

As in the past, the longtime organization to combat antisemitism makes no mention of Trump using the term at a campaign rally last night.
The term “Shylock” is rooted in a longstanding antisemitic stereotype. Regardless of intent, its use can reinforce harmful tropes about Jews and normalize language that has long been used to target the Jewish community.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The term was used (for at least the second intent in as many years) by President Trump. forbes.com/sites/siladity… Important context to point out the user of the term regardless of intent.

Time and time again, Trump defaults to antisemitic slurs and tropes. It's not a fluke. It's who he is. And he can't claim ignorance on the antisemitic roots and impact of calling someone a "shylock-type guy" because he used that excuse when he used the term last year. nbcnews.com/politics/donald-…

We're horrified by this planned shooting and relieved no one was hurt. We stand with Hindu and Indian Americans. No one should fear being murdered at prayer, and no community should face that fear alone. The white supremacist behind this plot named Jews and Black people as targets too, as so often happens. That's why showing up for others is one of the ways we protect ourselves. cnn.com/2026/10/15/us/teen-a…

This was out of line. Criticizing foreign investment and real estate, including Israeli investment, is fair game. But it's not fair game to frame Israeli investments as part of a broader narrative about global domination and the root of society’s problems. Singling out Israeli investment and portraying it as inherently sinister is where criticism of Israel and Israelis crosses into an antisemitic trope.

This is an undemocratic attack on an elected official just weeks before the midterm elections. We find reports that the justification is immigration paperwork from her childhood to be deeply upsetting, too. This is part of a larger trend of threatening and targeting elected officials. We condemn it and everyone else should too. nytimes.com/2026/10/12/us/po…

There can be absolutely no excuse for glorifying terror and the murder of innocents. Chants of "intifada" and "long live Hamas" at a rally to honor the victims of October 7 and support Palestinian freedom are inciting and unacceptable. jta.org/2026/10/07/ny/on-nyc…

"Historically, engagement is better for Jews than disengagement or antagonism. There are good reasons to disagree, to oppose, to make that opposition public, to say it loudly. With the midterms under a month away, many “politically homeless” Jewish voters are wondering what to do with a new crop of Democratic candidates. momentmag.com/moment-debate-…

In a new open letter on @TimesofIsrael, Nexus Project President Jonathan Jacoby asks ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt to reconsider the ADL’s response to the Mamdani administration’s new strategy to combat antisemitism. blogs.timesofisrael.com/an-o…
