Halloween Hazards With Spooky Season upon us and "Trick or Treat-ing" happening today , we thought it would be helpful to remind you about common exposures that we hear about during this period. GLOW STICKS - Glow sticks will usually only cause mild signs when ingested. They are bitter tasting and therefore most animals will only ingest a small amount of the liquid. There is also foreign body risk if parts of the plastic are swallowed. CHOCOLATE - Contains theobromine, which can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, elevated heart rate, tremors, and even seizures. Keep all chocolate well away from pets. SWEETS - Most sweets contain sugar and when eaten in large quantities, will likely cause gastrointestinal upset. Any sugar-free sweets or chewing gums containing xylitol must be kept away from dogs - always read the label. PUMPKIN - While plain, cooked pumpkin is safe in moderation, ingesting raw or mouldy pumpkins can cause gastrointestinal upset or expose pets to tremorgenic mycotoxins when it is mouldy, which may lead to tremors or seizures. Dispose of any left over pumpkin safely. CANDLES - Not toxic, but if swallowed, they can cause a gastrointestinal obstruction, and hot wax can lead to burns. If you think your animal has ingested ANYTHING other than their food call your vet immediately for advice
