🚨 This is the bit the British debate keeps missing. While we argue endlessly about whether Brexit can be reset, Europe is openly discussing a much deeper UK-EU relationship. Bernd Lange: “Morning has broken” on EU-UK relations. The question is no longer whether we can move closer. It is how far, how fast and with what democratic mandate. 🇬🇧🇪🇺

🚨 The Treasury is expected to study the economic gains from moving Britain closer to the EU including a customs union, Single Market membership and potentially full membership. And the numbers are significant. Goldman Sachs estimates: 🇪🇺 Customs union: +1% GDP 🇪🇺 Single Market: +2–5% GDP The OBR still assumes Brexit will leave UK productivity around 4% lower in the long run than if we had remained in the EU. And a recent NBER paper estimates the hit to GDP by the end of 2025 at 6–8%. So when critics cry “Project Fear in reverse”, the answer is simple: this is exactly what the Treasury should be doing. Ten years on, we are no longer arguing only about forecasts. We have real evidence of what Brexit has done to trade, investment and productivity. Given what we now know, what relationship with Europe gives Britain the strongest economy from here? And it looks like government may be preparing to ask that question properly.

The world that produced Brexit no longer exists. Trump is less reliable, Putin is more dangerous and Europe is having to defend itself. Britain cannot respond to that new reality while voluntarily tying its own hands.

🚨 Another Brexit myth collapses. We are repeatedly told that Europe would never take Britain back. The evidence says otherwise. 🇪🇺 66.2% of EU voters support the UK rejoining 🇩🇰 Denmark: 75.6% 🇳🇱 Netherlands: 75.3% 🇸🇪 Sweden: 72.2% 🇪🇪 Estonia: 71.6% 🇵🇹 Portugal: 70.2% 🇪🇸 Spain: 67.7% 🇩🇪 Germany: 65.1% Even France 🇫🇷 described as among the most hesitant, backs our return by 58.6% to 19.4%. Britain is not being kept outside by a hostile Europe. We are being kept outside by our own political class’s fear of admitting that Brexit failed. Europe is ready. A majority of Britain is ready. The remaining obstacle is political courage at Westminster.
🚨 Britain could rejoin the EU within a single Parliament. A new @BestForBritain report demolishes the claim that rejoining must take a decade. The UK would not be starting from scratch. We are a former member, remain closely integrated with the European economy and have retained much of the EU’s regulatory framework. Finland completed accession in under three years. Senior European figures agree that, with political alignment and sustained will in London and Brussels, British membership could be restored within five years. Polling now shows: 🇬🇧 52% would vote to rejoin 🚫 Just 27% would vote to remain outside 🔄 More than one-fifth of 2016 Leave voters would now vote to return But speed requires clarity. Britain would need a democratic mandate, a formal Article 49 application, regulatory alignment and an unequivocal commitment to full membership, not another attempt to demand all the benefits while rejecting the obligations. Questions over the euro, Schengen and budget contributions would require negotiation, but they are not insurmountable. EU members already participate in these arrangements differently. The greatest obstacle is no longer EU law. It is Britain’s political courage. If @andyburnham seeks and wins a clear mandate, Britain could be back at the European table before the end of the next Parliament.

What Labour should do, Andy, is nationalise energy and transport and water for starters and stop feeding the billionaires with our money!
Price rises continue to hit household budgets hard - that is the legacy of Conservative government. Labour's task is to rewire the economy - lift incomes and make bills affordable. That will deliver hope again. theguardian.com/business/202…

Credit where it’s due. A very powerful statement .
Kemi Badenoch, "I don't want to live in a country run by people.. who debate whether my mixed race children are English" "I don't want to explain to my son, when we're watching our brilliant England team play football, that some people don't think our black players are English" "I remember back in when day when Ian Wright and John Barnes were playing, nobody questioned whether they were English" "We certainly didn't have sitting MPs - like former Conservative Attorney General and Home Secretary Suella Braverman who has now joined Reform UK - questioning whether they were English" "We must not let these people take us backwards, that is not the country that we are" "Reform UK MPs are openly questioning people's identity, they are not like us, we are not like them, we are different, we are the Conservative party" My view: Badenoch is right to reject the politics of racial exclusion. No child should grow up being told that their nationality, belonging or love of their country is somehow conditional on the colour of their skin. But it is extraordinary to hear it framed as though the Conservatives have consistently stood apart from this politics. For years, too many Conservatives indulged or amplified the same culture-war rhetoric: portraying migrants and minorities as a threat, treating citizenship and belonging as conditional, and refusing to confront those in their own ranks who racialised who gets to be “properly” British. Suella Braverman did not emerge from nowhere. She was promoted by the Conservative Party to be Attorney General and then Home Secretary, and was repeatedly defended by senior Conservatives while using inflammatory language about immigration, multiculturalism and identity. The party cannot now act as though she was simply an outsider whose politics had nothing to do with it. The contrast with Reform is real in tone and increasingly in substance. But the Conservatives cannot credibly present themselves as the antidote without acknowledging how often they helped normalise the ground Reform now occupies. Britain belongs equally to everyone who calls it home—not merely to those some politicians decide look or sound English enough.

50% of teachers say a crowded curriculum squeezes out the arts. The government must give young people the chance to study a broad range of creative subjects. Sign the open letter if you agree ➡️ tinyurl.com/OpenLetterAM

No one working in the creative industries or indeed believes in the importance of the arts should ever vote for a Kimi Badenoch govt which would further diminish DCMS funding, the trend of which is disappointingly yet to be reversed by Labour. artsprofessional.co.uk/news/…

Well, it makes sense to me. Re-nationalise water!
"The national mood is that water companies have failed" @GreenJennyJones is, as ever, spot on. There is close to zero public support for privatisation continuing yet, for some reason, the government are unable to read the room.

Re Andy Burnham’s comments on Brexit, there is, however, an urgency about rejoining the EU: it needs to be done and made cast-iron against any interference from either a future Tory or Reform govt who will want to take us further away from the position we are in even currently.
