“Why would anyone set up a business in this country right now?”
It’s becoming impossible to take risks, hire and build in Britain.
No wonder people are thinking twice.

The diesel crisis shows the uncanny parallels between our energy and economic policy:
- Keep headroom pitifully low
- Blather about 'public control'
- Fail to treat crises as actual crises
- Bleat about global markets but keep us wholly dependent on them
Quick thread (1/?)
Very interesting analysis of the current Diesel price spike and looming crisis

Exclusive:
Kemi Badenoch will publish a 30,000-word booklet summing up the principles of her new Tory Party at conference.
It is 95 pages long and inspired by ‘The Right Approach’, a 1976 pamphlet by Keith Joseph which laid out the tenets of what became Thatcherism.
The Sunday Times has been handed a copy. It is the clearest distillation to date of what the Badenoch project stands.
‘The Right Way’, as it’s been titled, reveals her values and underlying approach in six broad areas
- Economy
- Energy
- Government
- Country
- Defence
- Borders
Just don’t called it ‘Badenochism’. The leader has her own word for it: “Kemistry.”
I suspect we’ll referring back to this foundational document for a long while to come…

THIS, THIS, THIS
Half of the 50pc (!) rise in the cost of new housing is down to increased regulations and tax. Demand isn't the problem.
Remedy: cut the thicket of regulations delaying reservoirs and runways and saddling UK with the world's highest construction costs. times-comment.com/hs2

An utter shambles, open for roughly five hours. Anyone using an agent or shock horror busy farming may well have missed out. If this is the new reset with the countryside the Labour Party really has a long way to go.
Window 2 of the Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026 (SFI26) closed at 15:48. Thank you to everyone who took the time to submit an application.

What is wrong with @DefraGovUK? They just don’t get it. Farmers have had an enough… we can’t keep expecting them to scrape by in such a ridiculous way.

This really is nonsensical. Claims £14bn could be raised by increasing CGT to income tax rates.
HMRC estimates that a 10% increase in CGT would *cost* £3.5bn. Exact magnitude can be disputed, but it sure as heck wouldn't raise close to £14bn.

Some news: @cmackinlay and I have been asked by @griffitha to report to him and @Conservatives on how to cut tax, admin and regulatory burdens on small business/self-employed, how we deal with issues like IR35 and Making Tax Digital, and what we can learn from other countries.

This week, I joined @RishiSunak, @JeremyClarkson, Stephen Fry, Colin McFarlane, Steve McQueen, and Nick Jones, in writing to the Health Secretary about prostate cancer - the most commonly diagnosed cancer for men in the UK.
Yet, despite this, we still do not have a proper, national, targeted screening programme that involves all those at higher-risk.
We are calling on the new Health Secretary to take bold action now - put in place a targeted screening programme that involves all those at higher-risk. Without it, more men will die, and more families will lose a loved one. This is avoidable and can be done.

Lance Corporal James Freeman served our country with dedication, professionalism and pride.
He was a greatly valued member of his regiment who will be deeply missed.
My thoughts are with his family, loved ones and colleagues at this devastating time.

Three years ago, we set out to take a different approach, to think more carefully about how the Duchy could use its land to create opportunity and support people over the long term, including launching a project here in Cornwall to help tackle homelessness with the right support around it. It’s fantastic to come back at Nansledan and to see that beginning to take shape, and to meet some of the people now calling it home. There’s still more to do, but it’s encouraging to see what’s already possible when you bring together the right people, ideas and ambition. W

At long last, Labour has snuck out a partial u-turn on their vindictive Family Farm Tax.
It is too late for some, however.
Businesses and lives have been lost. Rural communities will not forget the distress, pain and panic this government has caused them.
