If you ask an academic what they are an expert in and they say "teaching" then they probably don't belong within fifty feet of a university

SOLT research is really "salting the earth" of the higher education Carthage, hey. Nothing good grows from colleges and departments where people pass off pedagogical thought bubbles as disciplinary research

This should be illegal. The harms of this tech (enabling scams & fraud) obviously outweigh any potential benefits right now. Politicians should outlaw this as a matter of urgency.
We believe voice is the most natural way to interact with intelligence, so we created Dessa, the most authentic full-duplex speech model ever built. Talking with it feels like talking with a person…full of emotion, nuance, pauses, and a natural cadence. block.xyz/dessa

Academics should get used to the idea that the parts of the internet we most value - preprint archives, journals, encyclopedias - don't have big cybersecurity budgets and might well not survive what's coming.

🔥 🔥 🔥 Australian authors and industry reps fight potential copyright exemptions for AI theft. “We cannot be so indoctrinated by tech exceptionalism as to believe the largest companies on the planet cannot possibly obey our laws.” artshub.com.au/news/news/aus…

I mean why is anyone surprised? We don’t regulate the tech industry
Things are moving so fast that everyone seems to have completely missed how insane it is that AI companies have been allowed to unleash agentic AI products with no regulatory guidelines.

It's so funny seeing everyone suddenly take this seriously now Torsten's on it - @arakharazian put it out nearly two months ago. Here it is in my September 8 2026 concentration risk newsletter. wheresyoured.at/concentratio…
Circularity in AI Shows Up in Token Spending Too "Ramp data show that 80% of the top 1% of AI spenders are VC-backed, compared with only 13% of the median spender, suggesting that the circularity seen among AI hyperscalers and model providers also extends to token spending, as the startups buying the most compute are paying for it with venture capital rather than organic earnings, see chart below. If the AI payoff is slow to materialize or never arrives, VC returns would come under pressure, since the capital funding today’s token spending would have little to show for it, and a pullback in venture funding could in turn weaken demand for compute." AI - the next wave of American imperialism. Google felled an estimated 250,000 to 400,000 trees in Finland for planned AI data centers, through its Finnish subsidiary Tuike Finland.

Tell me you haven’t read Montesquieu without telling me you haven’t read Montesquieu, amirite?
His ancestors died on the Marne, at Verdun, at Passchendaele and at Dunkirk for this.

there's evidence that the use of AI in schools is delivering the opposite of "intellectual flourishing"—maybe in some bubbles the use of these models is leading to more reading and philosophical debates but I'm inclined to think that's an exception to the rule
AI IS AMAZING I know it's hip to worry about the decline in book reading and how chatbots will impoverish our brains. But TBH, this is not at all what I see. I wrote about how we're in this wild moment for intellectual flourishing and how all of us are the children of dancers.

I'd prefer publishers focused on literary qualty, not politics, because they are mostly bad at the latter, better at the former. A huge % of excellent writers historically are not on or of the left, and I don't know why we'd want or expect them to be.
I don’t think a literary publisher has any business being right-wing. I will make you a deal. You can publish, but you cannot call it literary.

starting to think tenured scholars jumped on the public-facing academia bandwagon partly because they knew there would be no next generation of uni-affiliated career scholars to read their niche articles hidden away in inaccessible journals
