Crested sun orchid (Thelymitra x irregularis) near Genoa, VIC. Regarded as a hybrid between the spotted + pink sun orchids - which are both common at this location, so story checks out ;) Only one flower out but other possible plants in bud nearby #orchids #inthefield #ozplants

2024 UK - Get in there! The Ghost #Orchid (Epipogium aphyllum) is one of our rarest species, and one that doesnโt need an introduction. After 30 years of searching Iโm beyond delighted to have chanced upon one @EuropeanOrchids @Mariposa_Nature @BSBIbotany #wildflowerhour

Well worth the effort to go to Chilterns from Cotswolds. Tx to @duncan_dine & @becky_cmd for taking me (& hubby). Violet Helleborine & ssp rosea were primary target also
Broadleaved Helleborine & solitary Pyramidal O in hedge bottom. Delightful grassland species seen too

Weekend in Dorset, and a fantastic day with @VincentBlood7 and @withylake , including my first UK wasp spiders - at last!
Oh yes, and Bog Orchids at a new site for all of us, some growing unusually out of dry-ish raised moss cushions.

22/6/24 Highland - I do love a pair of species adjacent to each other. Coralroot (Corallorhiza trifida) and Lesser Twayblade (Neottia cordata) #Orchids may be small, green and favour growing in tick-infested bogs but they're super charming #wildflowerhour

Some orchids for a change. Tiny and beautiful Small White Orchid (Sligo); eerie chlorophyll-free Bird's-nest Orchid (Roscommon); Greater Butterfly Orchid (Sligo) with its splayed pollinia and the white form of Pyramidal Orchid (Dublin)

Loads of highlights from the last few days in Ireland: Leptidea sinapis, L.juvernica, Neotinea maculata, Anania funebris, Irish Marsh orchid, Pearl-Bordered and Marsh Fritillaries, Chough, Spring Gentian and much, much more. Superb place to visit with great scenery as well!
ALT Neotinea maculata or Dense-flowered orchid on the Burren, County Clare.
ALT In Ireland, Leptidea sinapis only occurs on the Burren. Elsewhere L.juvernica (Cryptic Wood White) is found. Differences are down to genital exaimination.
ALT Anania funebris was one of my favourites and seen at several sites in the Burren.

26/4/24 Kent - Dropped by Kent in preparation of our @Mariposa_Nature orchid tour in early June that I'm co-leading with @dunnjons. Was a nice excuse to catch up with this awesome mirrorless Early Spider #Orchid (Ophrys sphegodes). Reminds me of my hairline! #wildflowerhour

This is what 21st century attitudes of @NENorthWest look like. Complete apathy.
