ALT a photograph taken at Auschwitz - depicting only 3 uniformed SS soldiers, the rest either general German military or even civilian. Captioned below: "Someone was asking in a thread what kind of people could work for ICE right now. it's a good time to remember the image above are those who put children in gas chambers. When I was little, I asked what kind of people could work at a concentration camp. the answer to both questions, I think, is "normal people who have accepted the dehumanization of another group of people."

ALT Hans Oster, pictured in 1939. Captioned: "Hans Oster, a German opposed to Nazism as early as 1934. Working in the Abwehr (German "Counterintelligence"), his position allowed him to create false papers, link resistance members together, disguise anti-nazi efforts as intelligence investigations, and give restricted information to the Allies."

ALT Helmuth Hübener, a German 17-year-old boy who was executed by beheading for resistance against Nazism - after returning from seeing Krystalnacht in tears, his older brother showed him a radio picking up the BBC... He remains the youngest person to be sentenced to death by the Nazi's "Special Court". During his trial he deliberately acted self-absorbed and aloof, mocking the judge and claiming the resistance was his efforts alone, hoping to spare his companions lives. Incredible, yet it worked! His friends were given merely 2-5 years in prison, and his older brother was not punished at all!

ALT The battle of Castle Itter, 1945. Just weeks before Hitler's suicide, Josef Gangl of the German Wehrmacht stumbled across French P.O.Ws in an SS-captured castle. Struck by their situation, he rushed to a nearby US Infantry division, resolved to join them - and, to his shock, found his entire platoon joining too! on their return, Josef's actions even touched the heart of the SS soldier guarding it, Kurt-Siegfried Schrader - Josef reminded Kurt his injuries had been bandaged by the very prisoners he was tasked to keep - Could he bear what would happen to them, if he stood idly by? indeed, he could not! and so it was, once the SS troop returned from patrol, they found the entire castle armed to fight back - and even their own SS troops there assisting that fight for freedom! in the end, all prisoners escaped free - only Josef himself died, succeeding in taking a bullet intended for a french political leader.
