It is fruitless to think Christianity’s mission is to establish an earthly kingdom. In John 18:36, Jesus told Pilate, “My kingdom is not of this world.” Jesus made it clear that if His kingdom were earthly, His servants would have fought to prevent His arrest. In Matthew 26:53, He reminded His disciples that He could call upon His Father and receive more than twelve legions of angels. Pilate thought he held Jesus’ fate in his hands, yet Christ could have summoned heaven’s armies and made Rome’s power utterly insignificant. Jesus didn’t come to overthrow Rome and establish an earthly empire. He came to conquer sin and death, redeem His people, and establish His kingdom through His death and resurrection. Many Jews misunderstood the Messiah’s mission, expecting a political deliverer who would restore their national glory. They wanted an earthly king. Sadly, many professing Christians make the same mistake today. Our mission is to preach the gospel, make disciples, and proclaim Christ as Lord—not to confuse political victories with the advancement of His kingdom. That doesn’t mean we abandon politics, ignore evil, or stop pursuing righteousness. Our faith should influence every area of life. But the mission of the church is not to seize earthly power; it is to proclaim the King who saves sinners. Our hope is not in a president, a political party, or a nation. Our hope is in Jesus Christ.
