🚨🚨Sir Alex Ferguson shares how Cristiano Ronaldo called him first to reveal his decision to retire from international football: 🗣️ Sir Alex: “When Cristiano’s name appeared on my phone, I answered the way I usually do. ‘How many have you scored now?’ Normally, he laughs straight away. This time, he said, ‘Boss, I need to tell you something.’ So I put the television on mute. ‘I’ve decided to finish with Portugal. Before the announcement, before everybody starts talking, I wanted you to hear it from me first.’ I let him speak. He spoke about the shirt. His family. How long he had been carrying this decision around. Then he asked me something that caught me off guard. ‘Do you think it’s the right time?’ Even after everything he has achieved, he still wanted his old manager’s opinion. That meant a great deal to me. I said, ‘Cristiano, I can help you with a lot of things. Knowing when you’re ready to take that shirt off has to come from you.’ He told me he felt ready. But I could hear how much it hurt. You spend your whole life fighting to get into that team. Nobody prepares you for the day you have to leave it. I asked him, ‘Have you thought about what you’re leaving behind?’ He started talking about the goals. I interrupted him. ‘Think a little harder, son.’ Think about the children who wore your name on their backs before they could properly spell it. Think about the families who gathered around a television because you were playing. Think about how many young Portuguese players walked into a dressing room, saw you sitting there, and suddenly stood a little taller. You gave that country someone to believe in for years. Through disappointment, through criticism, through nights when the whole world seemed to be watching your next touch. You kept coming back. Portugal will have wonderful players after you. I hope they do. You hope they do. But every one of them will grow up knowing what Cristiano Ronaldo did in that shirt. That belongs to you forever. There was a little silence. Then he said, ‘Thank you, boss. I needed to hear that.’ I gave him a moment. Then I said, ‘Right. Now, let’s make sure we understand each other.’ ‘About what?’ ‘This retirement business. You’re talking about Portugal.’ He started laughing. He knew where I was going. ‘There’s still the small matter of a thousand goals.’ ‘You haven’t forgotten?’ ‘Forgotten? I’m expecting you to finish the job.’ I told him, ‘You can have your farewell with Portugal. You can cry, exchange shirts, wave to the crowd. You’ve earned every second of that. But you’re not putting those boots away until you’ve scored a thousand.’ He laughed properly then. And suddenly I could hear the young lad again. The one who always thought there was another goal in him, even when I was pointing at the bench. ‘Still giving me orders, boss?’ ‘Apparently somebody has to.’ Before we hung up, I told him how proud I was. I wanted him to hear those words clearly. Then I added one final instruction. ‘When that thousandth goal goes in, I expect another phone call.’ ‘You’ll get it, boss.’ He said I told him he has to win the bloody match as well.’”

It’s so hard to write you a goodbye like this. Nothing sounds right, and nothing can convey what you’ve done for us or for me, as a country, as citizens or as players/athletes. Much less thank you the way you deserve. I can’t imagine letting you go like this and just saying “you’re going to be sorely missed” or “you were incredible, we’re going to miss you so much.” When, in fact, you’ve earned the right to keep doing what you love most, for the people you love, where you want and for as long as you want. But, of course, I can’t help but dedicate a few words to you at a moment when you’re saying goodbye to your international career, which gave me, probably, one of the greatest pleasures of my life. To be honest, I don’t know which means more to me: having represented Portugal or having shared a dressing room with you and so many other moments. It may sound like an exaggeration, but that’s the greatness I see in you. Why? Perhaps because, when I arrived at Sporting (because you were also developed there, handpicked by Mr Aurélio Pereira), still a kid, you were the one everyone was talking about, whether at United or already at Euro 2004. I was 9 years old!!! Perhaps because, when I turned professional, at the same club as you, after 10/11 years of hearing about you and drawing on what you had drawn on, while you were winning countless individual and team trophies, including endless Ballons d’Or and Champions League titles, I realised how difficult and incredible it was to get where I had got to. Perhaps because, when I met you, unlike with so many people, I realised how intelligent, ambitious, humble enough and different you are. And I was perfectly fine with that, as well as with all your flaws. Flaws that also helped you become the greatest of all time. Perhaps because you started playing football before I did, I’m already in my 30s and you’re still playing, at an incredibly high level. And more than half the world has no idea how difficult that is or what it takes. Perhaps because what you’ve done and achieved had never been seen by any human being in the world, let alone a Portuguese one. And, a little while ago, I mentioned Ballons d’Or and Champions League titles with a casualness and matter-of-factness that aren’t, never were, supposed to be there or even real. With that, you made me and millions of Portuguese people talk about, believe in and live football and life in a way that was completely different from anything that had been possible until then. You made us dream of things from your very first European Championship with the national team. I was 9 years old!!!!! How is that even possible? And, again, perhaps because, year after year, being either the 1st or 2nd best in the world, you were always at the top, sustained by your discipline, necessary arrogance, belief and faith. Traits I identify with a great deal. For these few “perhapses,” I thank you so much for sharing so many moments with me, on and off the pitch! For being who you were and are! And for inspiring me to be better throughout my life. It will never be enough to say that I’m going to miss you on the pitch… But, again, I’m grateful to have lived in the same era as you! And, as you used to say, in 20/30 years I’ll be in some tavern talking about you and what I saw you do. With great pleasure. Thank you, Bicho ❤️
