Hey everyone, I’m Alex, and I’ve been head over heels in love with crypto and NFTs for about 4-5 years now. My journey began with crypto trading, which eventually led me into the fascinating world of NFTs. Before all this, though, I was a huge gamer. Gaming was a major part of my childhood—my dad and I used to rent the latest games from Blockbuster for the weekend, which was such a cool experience! My very first console was an Amstrad, where games came on old-school tapes that you had to rewind just to get started. It was a crazy time, but I loved it. Fast forward to today, and NFTs have captured my imagination in much the same way gaming did. The idea of owning in-game assets as NFTs—things you can store in your wallet, not locked away on a console—was a game-changer for me. But as I got deeper into the NFT world, I realized it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Scams, particularly rug pulls, were rampant. I saw so many friends lose faith and leave the space altogether. It was disheartening, and that’s when the idea for my own project started to take shape. I wanted to build something not only to create a strong, recognizable brand but also to help those who had been burned by rug pulls—just like I had. The idea for RugDollz was born out of this goal. The last NFT project I was part of was called Voodoo Club, which featured Voodoo Doll NFTs. I loved the art and the community, and I even tried to take over the project after the founders ghosted us and ran off with everyone’s money. When that didn’t pan out, I decided to adopt the “doll” theme, but with a twist that made sense for my mission. Hence, RugDollz was born. Starting my own project was terrifying. I laugh about it now, but I learned some tough lessons along the way—like the fact that not everyone is your friend, and that people often overpromise and underdeliver. One of the craziest moments was on launch day when the dev who created our smart contract didn’t optimize it properly. We had to halt the mint, and I ended up learning how to deploy a smart contract overnight! But the next day went smoothly, and we minted out the OG RugDollz 5555 collection in just four weeks! One of the core missions of RugDollz was to help people who had been rugged. So, out of the 5555 NFTs, we only minted 3800 to the public and swapped 1000 rugged NFTs for free OG RugDollz. People loved trading in their “trash” for something shiny and new. That spirit of giving back became a key part of our identity. However, challenges kept coming. We were close to a project called Zombie Social Club, where I was a top holder. They promised us a metaverse world, which excited me because, as a gamer, I loved the idea. But then they ghosted us, leaving us and ten other projects hanging. Despite this setback, I stayed focused on my vision for RugDollz. We wanted to invest in three main things: a metaverse, a staking platform, and a second 3D collection for future game assets. Fortunately, the 3D collection was a success, but we ran into trouble with our first staking platform—cue the WenMint horror story. We approached WenMint with the idea of scaling up the NFT swap concept. They promised us the moon—a marketplace and everything—but what they delivered was a broken product that barely worked. Then, they ghosted us too. Still, it wasn’t all bad. Eventually, we found an amazing developer who built us one of the best staking platforms in Web3. With this platform, we’ve been able to give back to the community in a big way. It works by allowing users to stake their wallets gaslessly, scanning them for rugged NFTs from a database we’ve built of over 1859 projects. If it detects a rugged NFT, the user starts earning our token, $RUGZ. But we didn’t stop there. We wanted $RUGZ to have real utility, so we launched raffles and even an $eRUGZ merch store where holders could trade their rugged NFTs for fresh new gear. I know what you’re thinking—how is all this sustainable? We added a tiny fee when people claim their $RUGZ, which funds the ecosystem we’ve built. But the real magic lies in what’s next: building a game with assets you hold in your wallet. We’ve invested in creating a Web3 game where people can use their $RUGZ to buy in-game assets from our marketplace, finally fulfilling my dream of combining gaming and NFTs. Even better, anyone can stake their rugged NFTs and start earning $RUGZ—no token gate. So, after all these twists and turns, what I’ve learned is that being a founder isn’t easy.
