Happy birthday to Dave Cowens, my all-time favorite Celtic and basketball player. He was someone I’ve always admired and respected. He was the epitome of intensity, toughness, and team play. He was a skilled big man with a high IQ. He would fit perfectly in today’s game. I was fortunate to go to his camp as a basketball player and then to begin my coaching career as a camp coach! 🏆 2× NBA Champion ⭐ NBA MVP ('73) ⭐ 8× NBA All-Star ⭐ NBA All-Star Game MVP ('73) ⭐ NBA ROY ('71)

Three straight MVPs, from 1984 to 1986. Larry Bird stood alone at the top of the NBA. Winning one NBA Most Valuable Player award is an achievement that defines a career. Winning it three consecutive times is a level of greatness that very few players in basketball history have ever reached. Larry Bird accomplished that remarkable feat from 1984 through 1986, establishing himself as the NBA's most dominant player during one of the most competitive eras in basketball history. In 1984, Bird captured his first MVP award with an extraordinary all-around game, combining elite scoring, exceptional passing, strong rebounding and remarkable basketball intelligence. He could take over a game with his shooting, create opportunities for his teammates and deliver when the pressure was at its highest. He was more than a talented scorer. He was the driving force behind a Boston Celtics team built to compete for championships. Then came 1985, and Bird proved that his first MVP was no coincidence. He earned the award for a second consecutive season, demonstrating a level of consistency that few players could match. Opponents knew how dangerous he was, yet finding a way to stop him remained a tremendous challenge. He could beat defenders with his shooting, outthink them with his passing and use his understanding of the game to create advantages that others simply could not see. In 1986, Larry Legend completed his historic run by winning his third consecutive MVP award. He averaged 25.8 points, 9.8 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game during the regular season, demonstrating why he was one of the most complete players the NBA had ever seen. Bird could score from almost anywhere on the court, control the boards, deliver spectacular passes and make the right decision under pressure. His impact went far beyond the numbers on the scoreboard. What made Bird truly special was his ability to control the rhythm of a game. He anticipated plays before they developed, recognized defensive weaknesses and understood exactly when to take over. He did not need to be the fastest or most athletic player on the floor. His skill, confidence, creativity and competitive mentality allowed him to overcome opponents who possessed greater physical gifts. Bird's individual achievements were also matched by team success. He helped lead Boston to NBA championships in 1984 and 1986, further strengthening his place among the greatest players of his generation. His rivalry with Magic Johnson became one of the most important storylines in basketball, captivating fans and helping elevate the NBA to new heights. While their rivalry defined an era, Bird continued to build his own legacy through extraordinary performances and an unwavering commitment to winning. Winning three consecutive MVP awards is not simply about having one great season after another. It means maintaining an elite level while the entire league is trying to catch up with you. Every opponent wants to prove something against you. Every defense studies your weaknesses. Every season brings new challenges, new competition and new expectations. Bird faced all of it and remained the best player in the league for three straight years. That achievement places him in one of the most exclusive groups in NBA history. Only a select few players have won three consecutive regular-season MVP awards, a distinction that reflects extraordinary dominance and sustained excellence. Bird earned his place among the legends who defined the highest standards of individual greatness. His accomplishments are even more impressive when you consider the era in which he played. The NBA was filled with outstanding talent, physical competition and future Hall of Famers. There were no easy matchups, and every victory had to be earned. Bird consistently found ways to make a difference, whether through a clutch basket, a perfectly timed pass, a crucial rebound or a decision that changed the outcome of a game. His legacy also reminds us that basketball greatness comes in many forms. Intelligence can be just as valuable as athleticism. Precision can be just as devastating as power. And confidence, when supported by extraordinary skill and preparation, can separate a great player from an all-time legend. Bird understood how to use every advantage available to him, and he made the most of his abilities throughout his career. The years 1984, 1985 and 1986 represent far more than three individual awards. They represent a period when Larry Bird stood at the summit of professional basketball, setting a standard that generations of players would continue to chase. Three consecutive MVP awards. Two NBA championships during that remarkable stretch. A rivalry that helped define an era. And a legacy that remains firmly established among the greatest in basketball history. Decades later, Larry Bird's name still commands respect because his greatness was never built on hype alone. He earned it through his performances, his leadership, his competitive spirit and his ability to deliver when it mattered most. From 1984 to 1986, Larry Bird was the NBA's Most Valuable Player three years in a row. It was a historic achievement, a statement of sustained dominance and another reason why Larry Legend will forever be remembered as one of the greatest players ever to step onto a basketball court. 🏆

Larry Bird Trash-Talked Almost Everyone In The NBA. But There Was One Legend He Refused To Say A Word To: Julius Erving. Larry Bird was one of the most fearless competitors basketball has ever seen. He talked trash to Michael Jordan, challenged the toughest defenders, and sometimes told opponents exactly how he was going to score before doing it. But when he faced Julius Erving, something was different. Larry Legend kept his mouth shut. In his autobiography, Bird revealed that guarding Dr. J during his early NBA years was one of the most difficult challenges of his career. Erving was at the peak of his powers, and Bird was still establishing himself as a superstar. Every matchup felt like a battle. Bird admitted that whenever Dr. J attacked the baseline, he knew exactly what was coming. Erving wanted to dunk, and once he gained a step on his defender, stopping him was nearly impossible. Even giving him space wasn't a safe option. Bird remembered Erving's dangerous bank shot from the left side and admitted that defending it frightened him. And Bird believed Dr. J's defense was far better than most people realized. But the most surprising revelation came when Bird discussed their famous rivalry. "Believe me; I never said a word to Dr. J on the court." Bird even addressed the rumors that he had taunted Erving during one particularly heated game. According to Bird, it was teammate M.L. Carr doing the talking from the Celtics bench. That is remarkable considering these two legends once got into a physical confrontation during a Celtics–76ers game in November 1984. Their rivalry was fierce. Their battles were physical. Neither man wanted to lose. Yet Bird's recollections revealed just how deeply he respected the man who had helped revolutionize basketball before his arrival. Larry Bird never lacked confidence. He simply understood how extraordinary Julius Erving was. One Of Basketball's Greatest Trash-Talkers Had Almost Nothing To Say To Dr. J. Sometimes, the greatest respect between two legends needs no words.
