I see Barclays Bank are firing 5,000 people as the bank increases its use of AI. The job creation potential of AI and data centres does not seem to be happening yet.

I hope to go to a lunch with 10 ex colleagues all of whom used to work in the rough diamond industry. None of them do any longer, it has been a disaster of a decade for diamond mining snd rough sales.

All Tenkara rods seem to have ridiculous names. I have a cheap 7 foot telescopic rod I bought on holiday in Spain 25 years ago. The Tenax Zodiac is hereafter known as The Spirit of Harmony Osprey Talon. All I need now is a bit of floss and I am ready to go. Banzai!

One wonders if the U.K. govt ban on imports from the West Bank actually works will the supply of keffiyehs dry up? Asking for a friend, obviously.

Once again Gardeners World gets cancelled because of football. I would not say that I am a fanatical follower but I enjoy it and football just bores me. I am quite enjoying the whole Man City fiasco though.

I see Burnham is worried that Man City owners might sell up. The great establishment amelioration operation begins. If you cheat on a big enough scale it’s ok.

Spent yesterday fishing the Barle just above Exbridge, the penultimate day of the season. Nice grayling, tiny trout and another grayling that escaped. Perfect river for Tenkara, I think I might take it up next year.

Andy Birnam should look at South Africa to see what state involvement achieves. Biggest minerals boom in 20 years, countries all over the world coining it and RSA is crippled by govt regulation .

What famous much loved books or authors do you find unreadable ? I absolutely loathed To Kill a Mockingbird, I expected to like it as I had lived in Alabama for 3 years. Dickens I find dreadful with no redeeming features at all.

As all support acts are chosen to show how much better the star performer is surely fans must be delighted that all the support acts have pulled out of Ned Sheeran’s concert tour? Just see the main man, enjoy and go home. Apparently not and the shows have been cancelled.

The damsons on the way to the pub are ripe so I picked some today to make damson clafoutis. Smug or what.

Strange how things change. My father studied Greek, Latin and Biblical Greek to get into Oxford to read Law. What is funnier is that he then found that he preferred being a soldier to being a solicitor. The death of biblical literacy spectator.com/article/the-de…

20 years ago today I was in Antwerp visiting clients. I remember watching American diamond buyers carrying on their business even as planes exploded on the tv. Their view was that people were still going to get married. They were correct, life went on.

I remember seeing Tim Curry on stage in London when he was performing in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was great fun and the cast was magnificent. Shame to learn of his death.

What is the point of the energy price cap? It seems to make no sense in terms of controlling prices. Just a waste of time and needless expense.

It is worth noting that when the police wish to act they can move very quickly. If it’s one of their own or a celebrity it’s amazing how much energy and resources are deployed. One wonders how much nicer society would be if this attitude was employed in regular police work.

More athletics tonight on BBC. Probably the most boring thing on tv, on a par with rowing. Where is Gardeners World? Oh I have been a member of three boat clubs in my day and used to love rowing. However it’s a sport for doing not watching. Actually this is true of most sport.

I used to work for De Beers in Africa. 40 years on they have no mines at all in RSA. They are out of Canada. Namibia is now mostly off shore and Botswana is struggling. It is valued at just over $1bn. Talk about an epic tale of value destruction.
