What the Chancellor did in the #AutumnStatement in one chart 👇 - Received a £59bn windfall from higher tax receipts - Spent £32bn of this on higher welfare and debt interest (not public services) - The rest, £25bn, spent on tax cuts Result: total borrowing in 2027/28 unchanged

1% per year increase in resource spending is incredibly tight. If that's what happens a lot of public services will see cuts. Here's one we prepared earlier. Another year of 1% increase means another year of cuts for many,

NB - chancellor just announced a long term cash freeze in investment spending. That's a significant real cut of course. We already have public sector investment well below that in most comparable countries. That is not good for growth.

Top story in the mainstream media: 2 feuding brothers. Not in the news at all: ~3000 more deaths than usual registered in the week to 23 December. And it will likely get even worse in the next few weeks.
ONS deaths data has been released for week ending 23 Dec. 2,982 more deaths were recorded in-week compared to the 2015-19 average. That’s 26% more, the largest excess we’ve seen all year. Year-to-date there have been 567,379 deaths recorded which is 8% more than 2015-19 avg.

Summary of last two weeks ONS deaths data from @ActuaryByDay. On a counts basis, the excess increased both weeks, and the last week was the worst of 2022 so far. Detailed analysis of death rates follows later today from the Continuous Mortality Investigation (CMI).
