📢 Big news! @RefugeeWeekUK and #MoominOfficial are partnering to celebrate 80 years of Moomin stories. Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts & culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity, and resilience of people who seek sanctuary and will take place 16-22nd June 2025 around the globe. ”But what does Refugee Week have to do with the Moomins?”. Penned by Tove Jansson in 1945, the first Moomin story, The Moomins and the Great Flood, mirrors the realities of millions of displaced people seeking refuge. It centres on Moomintroll and Moominmamma, who are looking for the missing Moominpappa and a roof over their head — in essence, a displaced family looking for a place to call home. They find it in Moominvalley and the Moominhouse, which becomes a symbol of security, shelter, and a sense of belonging. The Moomin philosophy of courage, solidarity, hope – and the idea that ”the door is always open” – echoes Refugee Week’s values and this year’s theme of ”Community as a Superpower.” How to take part? 1️⃣ Join in Simple Acts – small everyday actions anyone can do to stand in solidarity with people who seek sanctuary 2️⃣ Teaching Resources & School Packs – inspiring young minds through creativity and storytelling. 3️⃣ Public Art Installations – celebrating Moominhouse values in cities across the UK.
