We learn that promise early. Experience gives us reasons to doubt it. Cruelty can be profitable. Dishonesty can win applause. Powerful people sometimes escape consequences that would destroy anyone else.
Yet Tuesday’s election gave Americans reason to reconsider what power can withstand, and what ordinary people can accomplish.
Accountability requires people willing and able to enforce it. Democrats now have to earn the confidence voters have placed in them.
Tuesday showed that our efforts can change the country. Now we must make that change worth trusting.
