French Navy Super Étendard crashed off Toulon OTD in 2002. On take off from carrier Charles de Gaule, the jet went out of control. The German exchange pilot ejected safely and was rescued by a SAR helicopter on standby as SOP (More on thread below 1/5 ⬇️ 🧵)
The Cuban Missile Crisis never went past "crisis" (thankfully) but there were air accidents related to it: this was one of them, as it was delivering ammunition in response to the situation. It was also the first-ever Cargo C-135 Stratolifter loss.
➡️ October 23, 1962: a USAF C-135 crashes in Guantanamo (Cuba), all 7 aboard die. Jet stalled and went down short of the runway during final approach.
Footage shows a jet similar to the one lost [ Reg. “62-4136”] on an exercise – note the dark smoke from the water injection on early C-135 models – you can see the full video here, from a USAF promotional video youtube.com/watch?v=qqm8V0PQ…
More accidents from this date on the comment below, that includes your daily four Aeroflot crashes, another non-combat US loss – and involving a civilian aircraft – the second “Nutts Corner BEA crash” and an Argentine B-707 loss whose pictures of the wreckage many will recall 1/7 ⬇️🧵
October 23 - A bad day for Soviet Aviation, with four aircraft crashes On This Day
➡️ 1978: Aeroflot Flight 6515, an An-24, crashes off Emelyanovka (Ukraine), all 26 aboard die. Cruising at 2400 ft in icing conditions, both engines failed, plane went down 14 mi from shore. Inquiry found crew did not follow operating procedures, noting training issues.
➡️ 1972: Two Soviet AF An-12s collide in midair over Tula (Russia). All 27 aboard both planes die. Accident occurred while both flights were on approach. Inquiry stated radar failed and ATC was unable to determine the aircrafts position. Poor visibility was a contributing factor.
➡️1959: Aeroflot Flight 200, a Il-14, crashes in Moscow (Russia). 28 of 29 aboard die. On approach at night in bad weather, plane hit ground on CFIT 4600 ft from runway. Cause: crew actions placing plane under glide slope. Factors: fatigue, inexperience, visibility.
You might not know the accident, but you might recall the pictures, as the wreckage stood “in situ” for some time
➡️ 1996: an Argentine AF B-707 crashes in Buenos Aires (Argentina). 2 of 8 aboard die. On approach, jet developed nose down attitude and impacted ground 2460 ft from runway. Enquiry pointed to crew actions, namely improper setting of air brakes and flaps.
Bad weather takes no R&R from combat zones
➡️1971: South Vietnamese Air Force C-47 crashes in Qui Nhon (Vietnam). 22 of 23 aboard die. During approach, under bad weather - heavy rain falls, due to typhoon Hester - airplane went down a few miles short of the runway.
The B-34 was likely jinxed. It was repaired a few months later and crashed on a ferry flight (all 3 KIA)
➡️1942: American Airlines Flight 28, a DC-3, collides with a USAAF B-34 over California (US). All 12 on the airliner die, bomber lands safely. Planes collided during an informal mid-air greeting. Investigation blamed bomber pilot by "reckless" conduct, he was acquitted.
➡️1957: a BEA Viscount crashes in Nutts Corner (Belfast, N. Ireland), all 7 aboard die. Aircraft drifted right of the runway on approach. An overshoot was carried out, but the aircraft went down 1000 ft south of the runway. Cause was not determined.
➡️1975: Connair Flight 1263, a DH-114, crashes in Cairns (Queensland, Australia), all 11 aboard die. On a missed approach in bad weather, aircraft collided with the ground during a turn. Inquiry pointed crew actions on the maneuver, noting pilot did not follow SOP.
A light aircraft crash landed in a highway in Nevada, yesterday. No one was hurt.
Aircraft was a Seawind 3000, went down "at Interstate 80 westbound, near Patrick, Nevada". ASN also reported its registration N6007, has been cancelled since late 2022.
And now the question: if you were Prost, wouldn´t you leave the car parked there?
In all honesty, I know I would.
Suzuka. More than just a circuit; an arena for some of F1's most timeless, unforgettable moments
Surely, none rank higher than the skirmish between team mates Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, and the crescendo of the 1989 title fight...

Correction on this one;
- First, a correct picture of the type (I had the wrong one uploaded)
- Second, one of the pilots perished and the other crewman is missing (I have no info, at the time of writing, if he was located or not)
Also, accident site is between Domèvre-en-Haye and Tremblecourt, Meurthe-et-Moselle, north of Nancy.
Thanks to @FlySafeFlySafe for the corrections

October 22 is a bad day for British aviation - This lesser-known accident had many similarities with the Staines Air Disaster, which occurred more than a decade later and would become the worst aircraft accident in the UK (not counting terrorist attacks such as Lockerbie)
➡️ October 22, 1963: a BAC 1-11 prototype crashes on a test flight in Wiltshire (England). All 7 aboard die. While assessing handling, jet entered a “deep stall” from which recovery was impossible. It was the first accident attributed to this phenomenon, peculiar to T-Tail jets.
Among the victims was Mike Lithgow OBE, one of Britain´s most renowned test pilots. His CV included taking part in the air attack that sunk the battleship Bismarck during WW2 and holder of the World Absolute Air Speed Record in 1953
This date is also a dark one for UK´s aviation: a BEA Airliner was lost in a midair collision with an airliner in Italy, along with a WWII midair collision that, by mere chance was caught on a photograph
➡️1958: Nettuno Tragedy (Italy): BEA Flight 142, a Viscount, collides with an Italian AF F-86 Sabre over Nettuno. All 31 on the airliner die, fighter pilot survived. No blame was attributed, but inquiry stated Flight 142 strayed from his airway into a military area.
➡️ 1944: two USAAF B-17s collide in midair over Thurleigh (Bedfordshire, England). All 19 aboard both aircraft die. Accident occurred over heavy fog, when the aircraft were returning from a mission in Germany.

Fun fact: If the wingman sees a legitimate threat inbound, he is absolutely supposed to "split" and go after it. That's what "covering his wing" actually means.
The movie was great, but a lot of the flying and tactics were Hollywood bullshit.

Yesterday, a U.S. Air Force T-6A Texan II crashed near Seguin, Texas.
Both pilots successfully ejected using the Martin-Baker US16LA Ejection Seat.

Techniquement il vole encore à Nancy qui a récupéré la mission de transformation machine, justement dans l’escadron dont provient le 2000D qui s’est écrasé (EC 2/3 Champagne).
Je pense que sa confusion vient de là.
