By my count, China has cleared 160 novel drugs for first-in-human clinical trials this year — so far. One of them is a potential treatment for sepsis, a condition associated with ~20% of all deaths globally. The drug, made by Pyrotech Therapeutics, is the first to enter the clinic that blocks formation of the gasdermin D pore (that triggers pyroptosis - inflammatory cell death - in sepsis). That’s just one of many — we looked at all of them here: breakingground.substack.com/…

Here’s some good reading to recommend to those gripped by this mania. techpolicy.press/the-black-b…
Replying to @micsolana
I think that's an OK description of LLMs from 3 years ago, but a poor one now. A lot of this changed with the introduction of the reasoning models. I don't even think Sam/Dario know *exactly* what their products do but it's a lot more robust than "predicting the next token."

exactly! its not capitalism in America. IT. IS. NOT. screaming it is, does not make it so, just look at the facts. why are we bailing out corporations for starters? why?
Abdul El-Sayed: “We don’t live in capitalism. We live in corporate socialism. If you’re a corporation, you can buy a politician to get that politician to rig the system for you so you make more money and you ex out every other market in which you compete. You need good healthcare. You need a good education. We need childcare. We need good roads and bridges. We don’t need to send our money to big corporations to subsidize them, we need to be invested in people so they have the human capital to be able to do all the things as they graduate and come out”

Wrong understanding -> wrong action -> wrong outcome. Belief that you can predict the end of the world and that we need to create policies to stop an imagined apocalypse can and do cause real problems. The Population Bomb led to the One Child Policy and caused the very problem it was trying to solve. Anti-nuclear activists fought one of the cleanest energies on the planet to 'save the planet' and ended up doing tremendous damage to the planet they were trying to save (they are still doing it). Mao's Red Guards believed that capitalism was evil and that only collectivism could save China and they helped cause massive starvation and famine across the countryside. History is chock-full with people promising to save us all from the end of the world and doing massive damage instead. Beware of do-gooders baring gifts.

this is such a beautiful concept.
Robert Rubin, a former US Treasury Secretary, was paid around 120 million dollars at the top of Citibank. When the bank nearly collapsed in 2008, he blamed an event nobody could have predicted, apologized, and kept every cent. Nassim Taleb has a name for that. He calls it the Bob Rubin trade: you keep the upside when you are right, and someone else pays when you are wrong. His whole philosophy, and this talk at Google, exists to kill it. His fix is almost four thousand years old. The first written law we have, Hammurabi's code, said that if a builder's house collapsed and killed the owner, the builder was put to death. Strip away the cruelty and one rule is left standing: you cannot walk away from a risk you created for someone else. Everything in the talk is that rule in disguise. A plumber is judged by the client whose pipe he fixed, so plumbing works. An economist is judged by other economists, which is how you can hand a Nobel to two men who say opposite things. Any job graded by your peers instead of by reality eventually rots. A pilot is the opposite, because he cannot fool the sky. Taleb asked the room what happens to pilots who only pretend to be experts. "They died and their passengers died." That is exactly why flying is safe. Here is the part worth keeping. Listen from about 22:50. The oldest law humans ever wrote down was not about gods or gold. It was one sentence forcing the people who build things to stand underneath them. "You should own your risks." Before you take anyone's advice, find out what happens to them if they are wrong. If the answer is nothing, it was never advice. It was a sales pitch.

what a kind mind...i guess he can't say dogshit on TV. that's why no one would let me on TV. i will say it clearly and unequivocally its rubbish. all of it. AI FEARS IS DOGSHIT! ITS A LIE. @realsteveeisman is correct. it's garbage.
EISMAN: “These companies are very nervous. They realize that there are no moats around their business .. they're trying to manufacture a crisis that will create regulation — that they think they can then manipulate to create .. the duopoly that they want."

I must be among an extremely small group of people (n=1?) that have both 1) trained a frontier LLM and 2) designed and synthesized custom viruses in a lab with my own two hands. And I think that the takes on AI killing us all by creating dangerous viruses is total bogus.

its NOT ego & even if it was, you say it like it's a bad thing. *it's that the reign of man will never end!* we shall not go quietly into night, man will prevail, & yes. our place is in the stars! fellow ape's, LFG!!! p.s. love the fire in his eyes - 🩷.
It all started with a male ego

consider the source. a person, who has lived a cuddled life almost entirely. lacks character, food from door dash, airbnb is home, "digital nomad", can't face a phone call, car = uber...lacks life any discernible real life skill. if these services go down. its extinction for them
I am still confused by how AI would kill literally everyone on earth. What's the mechanism? A robot sets up a secret lab where it makes a deadly virus? What plausible scenario would result in every last human dying?

i like what they do at @Bridgewater record everything - everything. get rid of privacy, everything everyone does record it. you say something, "please pull up the file".
This statement from globally respected historian Sarah Paine is without question statement of the year to date. For once you normalize the lie. The writing is on the wall. 🎥 TikTok - vm.tiktok.com/ZN82P6s5v/

great point. all for what? likes. is that it? when folks say AI is dangerous. bullshit! humans are dangerous. "panopticon" is the right description.
None of his friends have children ! Dating apps are awful.

very true. its pseudoscience. always has been. mostly BS. get outside. get sunshine, find a purpose. purposelessness makes you confused.
A man visits different psychiatrists office complaining of the same exact symptoms. Watch as each psychiatrist gives him a different diagnosis and offers all kinds of different medicines. The entire thing is a giant scam as far as I’m concerned.

less wrong.
Because wealth accumulation requires a certain level of cruelty. And most smart people are not cruel. For example, let's say I run a business, and I know that in order for it to make me a millionaire, I need to pay my workers 3k p/m. As a smart person, I know that 3k p/m is nowhere near enough for someone to live comfortably on. The only question that remains is whether I care or not.

THANK YOU! forget what others do to hurt you. focus on what you do to hurt yourself and fix it. only then, i repeat only then can you face your "oppressor". its crazy you have to explain this. focus on yourself and fix that first!
