#fairytaletuesday For over a century, archaeologists assumed a 10th-century high-status Viking grave filled with swords, an axe, armor-piercing arrows, and two sacrificed horses belonged to a legendary male commander. In 2017, DNA testing shocked the world: the brilliant tactical leader was biologically female.

The Vikings loved giving cats as wedding gifts. Not only were they thought to be invaluable to brides setting up their new homes, but they were also sacred to Freya, the #Norse goddess of love, whose chariot was pulled by two giant cats. #FolkloreSunday #FairyTaleTuesday
"Could they to servitude incline their pride,
Dreaming, they take on noble postures
Great sphinxes stretched out in the depths of emptiness,
Seeming to fall asleep into an endless dream."

#FairyTaleTuesday Gerald of Wales, in the late twelfth century, recorded a priest who met a talking wolf in the woods of Ossory. The wolf said: “There are two of us, a man and a woman, natives of Ossory, who through the curse of one Natalis, saint and abbot, are compelled every seven years to put off the human form and depart from the dwellings of men. Quitting entirely the human form, we assume that of wolves.” His wife lay sick nearby and needed the priest’s office.

In Irish folklore, a man keeping watch in a graveyard on a warm summer night saw two fairies rise up and dance upon a tombstone before him. He watched for some time, until he spoke. At that instant, everything around him became dark. #fairytaletuesday
