Her sister is unemployed and both families depend on a small donation campaign to cover basic needs. They have been displaced nine times and now rent an unfit home for about 500 dollars that offers very limited protection. Heyam’s mother needs knee implants and cannot walk on sandy ground, and both of her parents were once so exhausted that they fell inside their tent. Her father is now very thin and malnourished, dealing with breathing and blood pressure problems that require frequent medical visits. Another sister is living with cancer but cannot access chemotherapy because the hospital is no longer functioning and travel for treatment was not approved after their case was dismissed. The family reports ongoing shortages of food, cleaning supplies, diapers, and clothing, and they often cook over firewood which is physically difficult and exposes them to smoke. Over time they have lost relatives, friends, and neighbors, including a young nephew, Yehia, who was shot inside a tent while trying to find an apple.
