Building new housing near public transit is one of the most effective ways to make New York more affordable in the years and decades to come.
If you have to own a car to get to work, you’re paying an average of $9,000 a year in vehicle expenses.
79% of New York voters support building apartments near train stations, a new poll finds. The results suggest broad support for transit-oriented housing as New York debates how to address high housing costs.

New: The cost-of-living crisis continues to be crushing.

How far are you willing to go for your chance at the American Dream? Since the completion of I-80 in the 1970s, generations of New Yorkers have decamped to the Poconos, transforming a cluster of towns & enduring 3hr roundtrip commutes to their jobs in NYC. thecityreporter.nyc/2026/10/…

I keep thinking about this exchange. Blakeman says he's "created wealth" because of the skyrocketing home prices in Nassau County. The idea that young families are priced out just doesn't occur at all

"In 2023, Blakeman warned of a 'suburban uprising' if Hochul imposed land-use rules on localities. Yet Open New York’s survey found a majority of Long Island voters — 53 percent — support giving the state the ability to override local leaders in order to build more housing."
Newsflash: Nearly 4-in-5 New Yorkers actually WANT more housing, especially near transit. (via @AJeffNY @StreetsblogNYS)

Amazing. Blakeman brags about building the lowest number of homes in the nation and raising the price of housing by over *41%* in 4 years, while Hochul is (rightly) proud of taking on hard fights to build more and actually work to bring down housing costs for NYers.

crazy moment in the NY governor debate: Hochul says she wishes she pushed even harder on YIMBY policies, meanwhile, Blakeman literally *brags* about how his NIMBY policies have made housing so expensive

Zohran is right: NYC passed a major downzoning in 1961 (that triggered a temporary spike in building as developers rushed to build before the new law took effect), and NYC has been under-building housing for half a century as a result
finally we are starting to turn the tide
From @NYCMayor: "I want to see housing across our city... the lack of affordable housing is the #1 driver of the cost of living crisis. When you look at our history, we have not chosen to build the amount of housing we need since 1961. We're looking to bring that era to an end"

On average, Fast Track districts created just 12 homes per district per year from 2021 to 2026.
Meanwhile, the highest-producing district created 8x as many affordable homes as all Fast Track districts combined!

Last year at this time I was working street corners, slinging lit to promote the ballot measures to make this happen. Now, less than a year later, the measures are already proving themselves. I am so excited to see housing start being built in these 12 — and a whole lot more!

How about: "City with severe housing crisis voted to fast-track new homes – and now its happening."
New apartments are coming and there’s nothing these 12 neighborhoods can do to stop it
