Why penny-pinching on your AI game is idiocy
1) There is 0 point in building an AI game without the best AI available to you at a given point in time.
2) Distribution matters lots more than most think. It's easy to fall into the trap of assuming "an AI game will sell itself" and then cost-model for thousands of concurrent players prematurely.
3) It's easy to spend time reducing costs. It is hard to spend time acquiring players.
4) If you do have a massive player influx and are spending a ton, a) this is actually good signal for e.g VCs and b) is when you MIGHT consider optimizing AI spend.
If you're just making porn / slash fiction bots, that's one thing. Use a low param count OSS model, don't raise, and maybe you make good money for a small team for a few years before you get eaten by a scale player (like idk Pornhub). I would challenge the description of these as games, but it takes all sorts.
But if you seriously want to build games that weren't possible before AI there is 0 reason to spend build time optimizing spend on something that will be 10x cheaper in 6 months, speaking historically.
At best it's avoidant behavior; at worst, idiocy.
