On 22 May 2013, British-born Islamist extremists Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale murdered 25-year-old Fusilier Lee Rigby in broad daylight in Woolwich.
They deliberately targeted him because he was a British soldier. They ran him down with a car before attacking him with knives and a meat cleaver in a horrific attempt to decapitate him. They then dragged his body into the road and attempted to justify their actions in the name of their extremist ideology.
This wasn’t simply murder. It was an act of Islamist terrorism, designed to make a political and ideological statement.
Lee Rigby served his country. He deserved to come home to his family.
So, during a month supposedly dedicated to raising awareness, perhaps these are precisely the uncomfortable realities we should be discussing.
Is this not the awareness Britain needs? Or are we more concerned with policing the language used to describe the threat?
Never forget Lee Rigby. Lest we forget.
