Be a #HydrantHero this winter and keep your local hydrant clear of snow.
Clearing 1.5 metres around a hydrant maintains access for firefighters and helps them keep you, your family and your community safe. #OttCity @OttFire

Only 1 day left! New carbon monoxide alarms take effect on Jan 1, 2026. If you have a fuel burning appliance, get ready to install a CO alarm on every storey of your home #Toronto #safety

You asked, we have answers.
#CarbonMonoxide (CO) is invisible—you can’t see or smell it.
Starting January 1, Ontario requires CO alarms on every floor of homes at risk of CO exposure.
Ignoring the rule risks charges, fines, and lives.
No CO and smoke alarms = no protection.
If you’re unsure of what you need, we’ve made it simple. Everything’s at Ontario.ca/COSafety.

Q: I’m a renter. Do the new 2026 carbon monoxide (CO) alarm rules apply to me?
A: Yes.
Landlords must install CO alarms that meet the new 2026 requirements, maintain and test them yearly, and give tenants the alarm’s maintenance instructions.
Tenants also have responsibilities:
• report any issues
• never disable or remove the alarm (it’s against the law)
CO alarms save lives—and in rentals, fire safety is a shared job.

New carbon monoxide (CO) alarm requirements apply to condos and apartments!
If CO can get into your unit, including from a garage, service room, fuel-burning appliance, or building ventilation system, you need a CO alarm.
New rules take effect January 1, 2026.

The fire code is changing in January and calls like this show exactly why.
At approximately 08:30 yesterday morning, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call from a resident in a two-storey townhome in the 0 to 100 block of Briggs Avenue reporting that their Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm had activated. Firefighters arrived to find the resident waiting safely outside in fresh air. As crews approached the home, they detected a strong smell of natural gas and recorded Carbon Monoxide readings of 35 Parts Per Million (PPM) at the front door before making entry. Enbridge Gas was dispatched to the scene.
A full assessment was completed and Firefighters recorded readings of 45 PPM of CO throughout the home. High pressure fans were set up to ventilate the structure while crews worked to identify the source. Both attached townhomes were checked and no CO was found inside either unit. The investigation confirmed that the furnace had failed and was producing levels of approximately 3000 PPPM of CO, most of which was exhausting outside. Enbridge decommissioned the furnace and crews cleared the scene at 09:47.
A reminder that on January 1, 2026, the Ontario Fire Code will require every home with a fuel burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage to have Carbon Monoxide alarms near every sleeping area and on every floor. Working alarms save lives.
