Today, we celebrate #DobyDay! On this date 78 years ago, Larry Doby broke the color barrier in the American League. While @MLB has an honorary day for Robinson, Gehrig, and Clemente, Doby doesn't receive league-wide recognition - yet. Here's why that should change. 🧵

BREAKING: Star left-hander Framber Valdez and the Detroit Tigers are in agreement on a three-year, $115 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Valdez, 32, gets the highest AAV ever for a left-handed pitcher as well as the highest for a Latin American pitcher. Huge move for Detroit.

Andujar and Rengifo both make some sense. Conforto, Grichuk, Tauchman, and McCutchen could, too. Maybe Hoskins, although the fit isn't as clear there. Kopech could be interesting in our lab. Plenty of reclamation-type starters still unsigned, too.

Antonetti noted that the Guardians had made offers to several free agents, but the roles they offered weren't what those FAs desired. As spring training nears closer, you start to wonder if those desires start to soften a bit and they just start looking for a deal somewhere.

Donovan Mitchell conveyed to Cavs that he did not think team should stand pat at trade deadline, per @joevardon, @byJasonLloyd. Mitchell specifically wanted James Harden as a teammate.

Donovan Mitchell was influential in trading Garland. He wasn't happy with the team's direction and wanted change. Cavs are working to do more, but it remains to be seen if they can pull off other moves. Their lack of draft capital may limit them.

They'll try to move Ball, obviously, and possibly Strus. They'd need to add value to Ball to move him, but again, lack of draft capital. They're in on Giannis, but nobody knows what the Bucks will end up doing. I think the Bucks still want to try to keep him.

I have suspected for awhile that Stefanski was the driving force behind what happened to Mayfield and his getting pushed out.

Failed is quite the reach pal. Still waiting on a text/call from him after I got shipped off like a piece of garbage. Can’t wait to see you twice a year, Coach.

The Hall of Fame continues to lose credibility. Carlos Beltran - who admitted to cheating - will be enshrined, but Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Manny Ramirez, Sammy Sosa, and others who also cheated are shunned?

Still several free agents I think could help this team. Bader, Hays, Andujar, Marte, Conforto in the OF. Rengifo and Castro at 2B. Hoskins, France, and Goldschmidt at 1B/DH. Buehler, Canning, Paddack, Montgomery as SP options. Dominguez, Kopech, Junis, Allard in the bullpen.

So, Cleveland’s cash payroll currently sits at about $84.2M with Clase and Ortiz. If you operate under the assumption you won’t have to pay them in 2026, you then sit at about $77.4M, which would place them squarely in last place in cash payroll in MLB.

look, it’s a kind sentiment, but it’s not the job of a reporter to console a coach in a postgame press conference. Pressers are to ask questions to gain a better understanding of what happened or figure out what’s next — and do it in a limited amount of time.
