Institutions of higher education are supposed to be laboratories of free thought, places where ideas are tested, challenged, and debated openly.
Yet in recent months, colleges and universities across the country have increasingly done the opposite: silencing student journalists, punishing editors, and firing advisers who refuse to compromise editorial independence.
These are not isolated incidents. This is a troubling pattern.

I am proud and honored to announce that last night I won the Narrative Sports Reporting Award of the Students Division at the @PCLI Media Awards!
Thank you to everyone that’s edited or read my work over the last four years, the continuous support means the world to me.
Thank you to the @HUChronSports for offering me the ability to start my career as a journalist and welcome me with open arms back in the Spring of 2023.
This post wouldn’t be complete without thanking former Hofstra men’s basketball guard @JeanAranguren1 for allowing me to share his story. Without Jean, this wouldn’t have been possible.
Thank you to @StephenGorchov for supporting my story ideas and for making them come to fruition! Your kind words and guidance this season did not go unnoticed. Thank you for all that you’ve done for me!
To many more 🎉

Thanks to @PCLI President Cecilia Dowd, and the PCLI board for the love!
I had to run to another event during the PCLI Awards on Thursday night, so I was already gone by the time she kindly recognized my contributions to the Press Club. After 15 impactful years on the PCLI board - serving as President from 2014-2018 - I am stepping away in anticipation of taking over as National President of the @spj_tweets in October.
To me, PCLI will forever be the model of what powers SPJ - a strong local chapter that advocates for its members and region, while inspiring and educating the next generation. #SPJ is only as strong as its local chapters, and I am proud to represent #LongIsland on a national level (more on that in October).
Thanks to all past and present PCLI board members for keeping the train moving ... onwards! 🚆
