The ‘have three, only have one is available for ops’ is a well-known thing, which has been recklessly discounted by the British 'to do more with less' for many years. Originally 16 x Type 23s. Three sold to Chile 2005, left 13. Therefore four approx avail for global ops (though more could be deployed in time of crisis/war). But in recent years there have only been eight anti-submarine specialist (ASW) Type 23s, as rest general-purpose vessels. And so, even then only three max T23s (at any one time) could actually fully handle the vitally important ASW roles (protecting the deterrent working in northern seas and monitoring Russian submarine routes more generally). The UK also failed to replace 6 x Type 22 (Batch 2) ASW ships that were axed late 1990s/early 2000s, then binned 4 x T22 (Batch 3, ASW/general-purpose) without replacement in 2011. The T23s were meant only to replace Leander Class and Type 21 frigates btw. The abandonment of common sense 3:1 rule and so having a fleet with, say, 10 frigates available for global ops at any one time, coincided with the notorious 17-year 'frigate building holiday'. Fewer ships left in service were pushed harder and wore out even quicker. We are now fast approaching a nadir in British naval history (esp with no SSNs on ops) - even a shocking a low in modern global naval history for a so-called leading maritime power. But it should surprise nobody, especially in government or the higher reaches of the military (recent past and present) . And certainly not a surprise for readers of @WarshipsIFR magazine via our repeated warnings of where things were going, since the first edition in 1998, plus the numerous warnings of other naval specialists on here and elsewhere.

This government is taking preparations for war so seriously that the MoD is being forced to make £3.5Bn of in-year ‘efficiency savings’ during 2026-27. "we needed to make some savings to bring them into line and balance the books. I have taken decisions to stop doing some things this year” says Streeting.

Massive disinfo campaign to blame Ukraine for Musk cutting Ukraine's Starlink.

So, 10 days after Starlink/Starshield was limited over Ukraine, Musk has finally crafted his story and decided to break cover with an emotional explanation. Many will argue it exonerates him, I think it poses more questions than answers. Let’s see what’s missing here. 🧵1/6

The Chinook fleet is dying as it retires and only a niche SF fetish fleet of H-47(ER) Chinooks is been purchased to replace some at an insane cost and while destroying the helicopter portfolio. But lets add another role.
It's fantastic that a new mission (firefighting) is being added to the Chinook's list of roles right when the fleet is shrinking by potentially 50% over the coming few years. Coherence in UK defence is always the first to take a bullet to the head.

Ukrainian drones have reached deep into Siberia in a spectacular another long-range operation, targeting Russia’s massive Omsky Kauchuk chemical plant in Omsk, approximately 2,500 kilometers from Ukraine. Established in 1962, the Soviet-era industrial giant is one of Russia’s most important petrochemical producers, with several significant national distinctions: - Russia’s largest single-unit MTBE production capacity, producing a critical additive used in high-octane gasoline. - Russia’s largest isopropyl alcohol production facility, with an annual capacity of 60,000 tonnes. - Russia’s second-largest MTBE producer, accounting for approximately 16% of national production in 2026. - One of Russia’s leading phenol producers, accounting for approximately 18% of national production in 2021. - A top synthetic rubber manufacturer, supplying materials used in tires, industrial equipment, hoses, and other civilian and military applications.

US energy company execs have resigned in disgust as the Trump family is caught secretly expediting the funneling of $25 billion from a sanctioned Russian energy giant in exchange for allowing Russians to obtain a natural gas project in Alaska. According to investigations by The New York Times and Financial Times, Russia's Novatek allegedly concealed its financial involvement in the American project through a UAE-linked intermediary. Gentry Beach, a longtime Trump ally and close friend of Donald Trump Jr., signed an agreement with Novatek to pursue natural gas development in Alaska. Reuters documented the arrangement in February. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin discussed this cooperation on the Alaska energy project with Trump's representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, during negotiations involving Russia and Ukraine. The controversy deepened when Polar Train LNG's CEO, Joel Riddle, raised concerns about concealed Russian financing and possible sanctions violations. He departed in September, followed by other senior executives. The Financial Times also described discussions about a potential arrangement under which Novatek would provide technology for the Alaska project in exchange for sanctions relief benefiting its Arctic LNG 2 development in Siberia. According to The New York Times, Riddle and two other departing executives warned the Trump administration about the Russian financing and urged officials to investigate. The White House maintains that the project was mentioned only briefly and that no detailed discussions took place. There is no established evidence that Kushner or Witkoff knew about the allegedly concealed financing. Polar Train LNG denies wrongdoing. The central question is how a sanctioned Russian energy company became involved in a major American energy venture while Putin was discussing potential economic cooperation with Trump's representatives and a longtime Trump family associate was pursuing a separate agreement with the same Russian company. Selling Alaska to the Russians or selling Ukraine to the Russians - to the Trump family it's all the same. ft.com/content/e9cfbfbb-e65a…

The speed limits on Starlink and Starshield are still there. The speed has not been restored. And the delivery of interceptors to protect us against Russian ballistic missiles is still delayed. We’re waiting for interceptors that were already agreed on. But they are still not coming. This is a real problem, because the Russians attack us almost every single day. All of this is happening while we continue our quite successful operations on the front. We keep defending positions. Things have become harder – partly because of the Starlink and Starshield policies and speed limits. But our frontline is still holding and I am proud of how strong our people are. The national resilience moment that very nearly barely happened: A huge amount of work has gone on behind the scenes to plan for the "Be Ready" rollout, which was first trailed during the dying days of Sir Keir Starmer's government. Andy Burnham inherited the project as well as leadership of the much-promised but minimally-delivered national conversation on defence. Yet he appears to have chosen not to speak out on the launch of the new readiness campaign despite its national significance. Even Dan Jarvis, the security minister, who is leading on resilience, stayed away from journalists on Thursday, instead just publishing his ministerial statement and sending out a written post on social media. This lacklustre approach was met privately with disappointment among members of the resilience community. The concern - rightly or wrongly - is that it creates the impression that preparing the country (every post code!) for the possibility of any crisis, up to and including war, is not a top priority for the government. news.sky.com/story/be-ready-…
